I trained in judo and kendo under an 80 year old south korean trained in japan. Yeah, we had to fold and prep uniforms and clean at the end of class, took about an hour and a half, after the 2 hour class. Very rewarding though

I love how sports reflect cultures. Western is practical and laid back, while eastern is disciplined and ritualistic

I know it's a joke but it is a good habit to take care of your gear. For muay thai I made a habit of cleaning my wraps whether it be a quick rinse and air dry or an actual wash.

Just imagine the teacher just start yelling ghost dog lines at you. Not even the the death and fighting ones, just goes "There is something to be learned from a rainstorm!!! When meeting with a sudden shower, you try not to get wet and run quickly along the road. But doing such things as passing under the eaves of houses, you still get wet. When you are resolved from the beginning, you will not be perplexed, though you still get the same soaking. This understanding extends to everything... I didn't understand it, but if any of you get if, let me know. I'll get like 20 dollar gift card."

Does hema just give you gear and weapons for free? Or do you have to buy gear, and do they let you peak your gear?

I would never go home without cleaning my gear and a cold shower first. Turns out linen absorbs sweat like crazy and after a full day sparring and left alone in my trunk, it would basically smell like shit. My weapons? Yeah don't really care as much about those.

For anyone curious: kendo is not just a martial art but at its core is supposed to be a way to live. It takes the idea of samurai spirit and involves it in everything you do. The first thing you learn is that you must show respect: to your partners, your sensei, your dojo, your gear, and to yourself.

Kendo uniforms have a specific way they must be kept and folded when not in use so that the proper creases are shown, with each of the 7 standing for a different value you should live by. Traditionally made and proper uniforms should be made in such a way that they are naturally antibacterial and anti-odorant as well, so washing is done only with cold water and preferably by hand once every month or so (depends on gear and personal preference but color may wear out faster the more you wash)

Return on Investment must be considered.

As with many traditions/rituals in Japan (and everywhere else in the world!) I'm 100% certain overly formal, too-much-work setup/teardown/prep for the next session just stemmed from someone coming in with straight up broken gear/ineffectual clothing, etc., and had to be taught to take somewhat better care of their gear via repetition, and then it just took off/snowballed from there.

Japan is all about rituals, regardless of whether or not they actually return significant value.

Ultimately, the actual gain from such meticulous obsession is no more than an obsession with meticulous preparation/cleaning, etc. Unless your goal in life is to make that your goal, it doesn't help you.

Good enough is, in fact, good enough. If you need to learn something new, or stop a bad habit, then repetition/perfection is good for a time, but only while it nets you sufficient ROI. At some point, it stops being worth the time and resource sink. You're better off using the energy to build relationships, increase skill, and enjoy the world.

The difference between hema and kendo are the ereas they are from and the history of those areas. Kendo is Japanese. In Japan swords were more than simply swords. Swords and the smiths who made them were both highly respected by samurai. Real katana forged by certified smiths are borderline holy relics to them and as such there are very strict rules around wielding and owning a real katana in Japan. If you can't be trusted to treat your training gear with respect how can you be expected to treat a real katana with respect. There's also the fact that in Japanese society the collectivism makes people care about their appearances so even in their own home they wouldn't just leave sweaty practice gear laying around and they certainly wouldn't just leave it in their car either.
