I paid to go to school, to become a real estate agent. I paid to join a real estate company. I noticed that all the agents had business cards with their faces on them. I paid extra money to get my picture on my cards as well. The lady that owned the company did not like that I was dressed very well in Ann Taylor suits like she was wearing. She asked me in front of the other agents, how could I afford the expensive suits, that I had not even sold any homes yet. I was embarrassed. But grateful because a wonderful lady that I worked for at a stock brokerage firm as a marketing coordinator gave me all her expensive suits because she was pregnant by her new husband. Who I also worked for.
The next day when I came in the office, my business cards were not on the front desk like every one else's. They were taken and replaced by cards with just my name on them. I asked everyone in the office where my business cards were and she hollered out of her office and said do we have to keep hearing about those cards all day. I was proud of my accomplishments mainly because I was the only one in the graduate class that passed the exam on the first time on the first try. I quietly sat back at my desk. And she would not allow me to show homes on Lake Shore Drive but only ragged homes in the ghetto. When it was my turn to show an expensive home, she would snatch the listing out my hand and call realtors who didn't even live in Milwaukee but Los Angeles or other states that were her friends. I never succeeded in my Real Estate career because this white woman was not going to allow me to. I kept my accomplishments to myself and walked away from my new found career. Years later as I ride past my old real estate company, it is no longer there. They went out of business.

Leimert Park has been a neighborhood that is around 90 percent black and has been since the 1930's. Baldwin Park, affluent blacks since the 40's. Windsor Hills. (Tina Turners old neighborhood). has been affluent and no less than 80 or so percent black since the 1930's.
