People just read headlines. Confusion is the product. It's discouraging that weak science shares the stage with works like The China Study. Thank you for taking the time to bring this to our attention.

Great review. These headlines and cursory conclusions make me annoyed. People listen to these conclusions picked up by mass media and believe the lies. It's always an uphill battle for a whole foods plant based diet. Did you look at funding and conflict of interest? Usually that explains irrational conclusions from poor results. Unless it is just the inherent bias of the scientists themselves who likely eat meat.

I don't think a study of 300 people on a diet study conducted 15 years ago is that great. Just finished being vegan for 1 year and lost almost 100 lbs. Eat lots of oatmeal, chickpeas, veggie smoothies, and of course potatoes and beans. The best part is that I don't have to count calories. I think a Keto diet will eventually cause a heart attack later in life even if you feel fine and lose weight.

Hey man, I'm doing a masters in food health and nutrition with UCD and I'm getting fed papers that report no improvement in insulin sensitivity on a low fat diet! When you read the papers, a low fat diet is considered 28% total fat! It's actually hilarious but horrifying. Moving the bar to suit their hypothesis. Also been told that there is no evidence that low SF improves insulin sensitivity! I could cry sometimes!

Oats have some fat in them naturally. Palm and coconut oil are high in saturated fat which could be used (breaking rules but not animal fat). I agree they did not stick to the diet so the results are not applicable.

Good analysis. You would think that they would have stricter rules or guidelines. Kind of defeats the purpose to do a study on different diets when the subjects don't follow the basic premise of the diet.

It would be interesting to see what food the Ornish group were actually eating. This just reported on macros.

Well said, Andrew. A very nice assessment of how an “uncontrolled” study (where the actual food intake of participants is not controlled) can end up with erroneous results. The figures don’t lie - as you have very clearly and rationally shown. Those doing the study have not done their homework (or their due diligence) and have obviously published on flawed data (as you have shown, the participants could not possibly have actually met the Ornish diet guidelines). You have been too kind to the authors of the study - in my opinion they have been negligent in their analysis. The study should have been abandoned due to flawed data, ideally with plans to re-do it under tighter controls. Thank you for bringing this to public attention. There is too much dietary pseudo-science and outright quackery being given media attention these days, which is confusing for people who really are looking for help.

I always liked to get copies of your and the 'Good Docs' (you know who I'm talkin aboooouuuutttt!) referenced research.I also have a background in Biology and have had an interest in Nutrition for over 30 years. I used to refer to and print out studies to show friends, family and work skeptics all the proof and explain how it works. But they always have their minds made up and say things like..."but Joe Rogan said..." or "Jimmy Moore isn't fat, if you just pretend he isn't" ( no nobody said that, but I thought it was funny) or "Pete Evans wouldn't lie, 'cause he's got a fake suntan, whitened teeth and a real folksy personallity which speaks to me like the imaginary friend I've ever wanted". There is an incredible easy peasey Psychology Phd awaiting out there by correlating the obvious connection between Low-Carbers and Climate- Crisis Deniers. You're doing a great job Ando. Walked the hard yards...but I'm leaving those Medievil Peasants behind and getting on with a no pill life at 65. I'm leaving them to wait for Bruce Willis or Tom Cruise, or whatever imaginary superhero that inhabits their 14yo minds, to come in at the eleventh hour and set the world right. Keep going Buddy.

Could be that the Ornish group didn't follow the diet because it was physically/mentally not sustainable FOR THEM. Some people thrive on some foods. Others are harmed by them. There is no 'one' answer.

I'd like a detailed report on how you actually feel after being on an extremely low fat diet for some time. Any noticeable negatives yet? Loss of lean mass, libido or negative changes to skin? Digestion? Energy?

Actually your conclusion is in error. Based on your read, the Ornish diet is hard to adhere to. You can’t make that statement about the others until you have read them as well.

I think your interpretation of the study is wrong. This study showed what happens when people try to follow a strict diet. And they found that people have a hard time following the strict diets. If people followed the diet as prescribed, they would have done better, but that seems to be the case with all diets.
