Awesome and precise explanation. I always knew the general gist of the Brit’s wanting to hold onto HESH, and how rifled barrels were worse for APFSDS, but never knew the physics of why. This is a video I will use as reference for a long time, thank you!

And also why it took so long for the British is probably to make up the time their officers kept getting shot by militia men

Such an idiotic decision... Gulf war, 2nd American-Iraqi war, 4th Russian-Ukrainian war had shown that "tank-on-tank" combat is outdated and wouldn't be often case in modern warfare, so basically next tank gen should use rifled barrels, but UK want to rid of it... All who stand close to that decision should be thrown off the ministry of defence and Army HQ immediately.

In the beginning of warfare e started with hitting each other with wooden clubs. Then we evolved to throwing rocks and then launching rocks with sticks and slings, and even more until we started shooting little darts with feathers at the enemy. Then we made a handheld dart launcher that would propel a dart with great force at the enemy. Then we went back to using small rocks by launching them out of a pipe with gunpowder, then we went to smaller arrows that are pointy and have gunpowder inside of them. Until we decided to start throwing massive amounts of high explosive material at each other, until we needed a bigger bullet. Then we needed a bigger bullet that could explode, but that wasn’t enough since we also needed a hallow bullet that could shoot another super hot bullet. After all of this was done we decided it was best that we went back a few steps.

And now we are firing a really big dart out of a really expensive bow/crossbow

All was very clear. But NATO tanks haven't participated in tank vs tank battle for decades. It's involvement against the Russian forces in Ukrainian territory shows, that the leopards and Chellengers burn very well from good old artillery shells, and drone hits

i feel like railguns could get past the [impossible spin speeds for narrow projectiles] problem, magnets or a rotating clutch before the barrel could get a round spinning really fast before firing. if this was tank mounted though i think you would need to be stationary before activating the spin system if it was magnetic, or else the several thousand rotation per minute round might destabilize inside the barrel and that sounds pretty catastrophic

Maybe I am stupid but this my theory BB Daisy is not rifled against rifled Air gun will lose, but smooth barrel will Never wear out and that’s the advantage..On the other hand rifled barrel will give you Center shot…Same rule applies for tanks as well…

Funny how we go back to acient designs but different materials as a lot of these projectiles remind me of plain aimple arrows and ballista bolts.

You can still have HESH fired from a smoothbore though, just impart a spin on the round by slanting the fins a little.

They need to design a new kind of round for modern armors.
What it should do is fly overhead, fire a second round from the top down that penetrates the armor before exploding.

Good video. But now the Ukrainians report that the Challenger 2 has substantially longer effective range. So maybe the rifled gun, with DU APDS ammo, was the right decision after all.

Yet historically tanks have fired FAR more rounds at infantry and enemy positions than at other tanks. There is no reason to think this will change, especially as the age of massed armoured assaults seems over (see the Ukraine fighting). Tank jockeys love to imagine themselves in long range manouvering duels with other tanks just as fighter jocks think it is all about dogfighting but that is no longer the main game, if it ever was. I think the Brits should have stuck with the far better HE performance of rifled barrels.

Ucrainian tanks are very often used to beat trenches and its occupants. For this purpose, a rifled gun and HESH munnition, for sample, is far more effective than any smoothcore gun sabot using ammo. Just my two cents.

Another reason why the British took so long to switch was they simply were not fighting countries armed with tanks using CCA or spall liners. Rather they were fighting tin pot dictators armed with the finest Soviet surplus that was ten years out of date when it was sold for the very first time.

So, if the Brits want to continue using HESH, why not look at the way shotguns have self-rifling slugs? That concept could become the best of both worlds if they really worked on development.

i may be wrong, but i recall as a kid that the first M1 Abrams fielded a 105mm rifled gun but was promptly replaced with a 120 mm smoothbore because one of the issues they had was that the rifling would wear out relatively quickly and deemed not serviceable.
