The yoke would be much improved if the outer rim extended to a full 360 degrees, almost like some sort of wheel

Tesla is already planning to do the same, they just got a little bit late to the market. No big deal. I personally rather wait for the technology to be perfected and TESTED for a few years before I decide to buy a car with such system.

cool but INFINITI has had steer-by-wire in their cars for a decade. and also the variable steering ratio has been in bmw’s for a few decades as their “active steering” so nothing new here.

I think this is great, it removes moving parts making it actually more reliable and harder to break

Lexus had a power-split device for steering on LS600h in 2000s. It could theoretically change the steering ratio on the fly, at any steering angle. Imagine a Toyota eCVT, with the steering wheel on mg1, power steering motor as the engine and mg2 as the output to steering rack. They used a harmonic drive as the power split device. In case of a failure, an explosive charge would fuse the steering wheel input directly to the output of steering rack. Truly fascinating technology.

My favorite steering was in my 1986 RX-7. No power steering. Yes it was high effort in parking lots, but in return it was incredibly responsive and provided excellent feedback. And muscling the car around corners was just the best.

It's basically speed sensitivity in racing games when you use a controller, when the car is fast, the software limits the steering ratio

Think I'd want to be able to muscle-memory-predict how much (angle of hands on wheel) to steer into a skid or drift regardless of car velocity.

That sounds AMAZING. I've always wanted a car in which I have no clue how much my stearing affects the wheels at any given point. But in all honesty, this sounds absolutely terrifying. Compared to planes, vehicles don't operate in optimum conditions. This will be a nightmare on the roads.

A true question for me would be, what if you're in a corner at like 60 mph and you suddenly have to brake. Your steering wheel would be slightly turned because of the corner but once you slow down the steering would increase because of the lower speed right? I assume they have a solution to this kind of problem, just curious.

Airliner pilots be like: " PFFF. We had fly by wire controls for ages now. Thats nothing new😂". My bad. All jokes aside. It is really awsome to see this technology in cars! Love to try this out once in my life!

I mean, fly-by-wire has existed for decades in aviation now, even to the point where the flight control computers prevent pilots from doing certain actions. Lacking awareness of these safety features have led to fatal accidents as the aircraft have operated differently from what the pilot expects. That isn't to say the safety features are bad, but it does mean additional training should be mandated.

I see two safety issues, one positive, one negative. The positive is no steering shaft to drive into the passenger compartment in a crash. Yes I know that risk has been minimized through design, but this totally eliminates it. So a slight positive. The negative is going around a corner with a yoke system your hands will not be in an ideal location if the airbag goes off. Basically the difference between the old 10-2 recommendation and the current 9-3 recommendation, which as I understand it is mainly due to airbags. I don't do hand over hand, so for me that matters. For other drivers it wouldn't matter.

Also, I don't totally buy the redundancy argument. I had an 86 RX/7 where the heater door actuator was by wire (saving Mazda the expense of a 2' cable), and its controller went bad, causing the heat to randomly go full hot. Yes that system totally lacked redundancy, but I don't know how a redundant system would handle the conflict in commands where it isn't a failure to give a command, but the wrong command.

I wouldn’t dare daily with drive by wire anything.

The only thing I want my car to do that I didn’t mechanically input into it, is pump my damn brakes.

I own 28 cars, and the newest is a 93.

In my opinion instead of change the ration with the speed, it could be better if for the first 30 deg of rotation it has a ratio, then form 30 to 60 a bigger one and then from 60 to the end an even bigger… so you always know when you rotate how much the wheels are gonna move. And I don’t agree also with what you said about one person driving… cause if you fail to calculate it correctly you can still break with physical breaks

If you believe that this is unsafe, then I would recommend you to stop flying on the Modern day jets currently in the sky.
This technology is being used in airplanes known as Fly-by-wire. So if you can travel on a aeroplane without any worry there is no need to worry about this because we are talking about difference between the sky and the road.

so basically an old invention the us military first tested out over 80 years ago. though i have to be a bit annoyed if they all start adopting this, at least with yoke wheels. the classic one hand on top is now unavailable, meaning you cant really relax as much as with a round wheel with many grip angles

Wouldn’t the delay be the same in a mechanical steering wheel, because yeah it takes a while to change from direction, but on a regular wheel you have to turn the wheel way further which takes longer, eliminating the delay compared to a regular wheel
