Tiny houses have become a popular weekend retreat for people to spend some time living with just the basics, but for Rochelle Ryan and Angela Smith, the rental crisis has forced them into living in them full time.

The rental properties both women were living in were sold but the sky-high cost of renting in southeast Queensland forced them to look into alternative options.

If one bought a fifth wheel, one would have more thought out space and more for the value. Plus, one could move the fifth wheel more easily than a lot of these tiny houses. Tiny houses in my area cost $80grand for @300sq ft! This is just an all around terrible situation.

What exactly is Burton's point? If there is a fire or flooding; as he said the tiny houses are on wheels-so they can be moved if there is a fire or flooding.
Is that the best that this "advocate" can come up with? With a "straight" face, nonetheless?

Yes, this exact housing scenario is happening across Canada as well. Tiny house living is all well and good if it’s something a person truly wants to do but for many, it’s a last resort rife with compromises and obstacles.

At the moment, in the city I live next to (Hamilton, Ontario) city council has a plan to house the homeless in a tiny house community within the city. It has been hugely controversial with the NIMBY’s out in full force and effect, clutching their pearls and fretting…it’s a disappointing community response.

If city council’s and governments at all levels across the world gave a damn about the growing homeless crisis, they would
a) get back into the business of building affordable rental housing and
b) tax into oblivion Airbnb’s which have gutted rental markets everywhere.

My daughter moved to Calgary Alberta where people line up early in the am to view an apartment. Some people are offering more just to get one. She is renting a condo and just found out the rent is being raised by $200 per month. Its rediculous what's happening in Canada.

living in a tiny home is not being homeless. Which shows that being homeless is often a mindset and people just can't move from a mindset. And so homelessness becomes permanent.

The fact is that a tiny home is also a rental. You are placing your home on someone else's land. It's no different from an RV/trailer park, except the homes are newer and nicer. The landlord can raise your rent, and you're back in the same situation. What's worse, you have a figure a way and find the money to MOVE your tiny home somewhere else. It's not like you can put your tiny home in temporary storage until you find another tiny home village you can afford. Imagine buying a tiny home for $100k, and you no longer can afford the rent. It's not an "investment", since the value of your tiny home will depreciate. Only land appreciates in value.

Raschel's place is not a tiny house, it is a shelter. Big difference there. The International Code Council adopted an appendix for tiny houses some time ago. Ultimately to be considered tiny house. You need to have som sort of space even if complact for living, sleeping, cooking, and sanitization (Im probably missing some other requirements).

As a realtor in my opinion, a housing market crash is imminent due to the high number of individuals who purchased homes above the asking price despite the low interest rates. These buyers find themselves in precarious situations as housing prices decline, leaving them without any equity. If they become unable to afford their homes, foreclosure becomes a likely outcome. Even attempting to sell would not yield any profits. This scenario is expected to impact a significant number of people, particularly in light of the anticipated surge in layoffs and the rapid increase in the cost of living.

And I thought it was just the U.S. where the corporations are buying up single family homes along with multi units and working together to jack prices up and then blaming the renters for not being able to pay the ridiculous rents or not able to buy a home because the prices are outrageous due to the corporations making cash offers instantly on every house worth a shit and outbidding normal homebuyers looking for a place to live.

Why doesn't the council which reportedly spent millions on a new building for itself allocate public land for tiny homes as well as larger ones? Why do they have to charge a cent for a permit? The government could authorize a bond to develop the land to accommodate these home sites and solve the housing problem rather than exasperate these people. Time for the victims to run for public office and change the laws.

Rents are less affordable here in New Zealand. And house prices, even though they have fallen to very low levels, remain unaffordable due to high interest rates and the sadistic banks that are forcing higher deposits and more conditions on potential buyers. Councils are lapping up central government recommendations that tiny houses are treated as vehicles, permanent accommodations, or even both!! In our country we raped financially by the banks, the councils and central government. Tiny houses began as our way out from the control of these bastards, but they are now pulling everyone back under their grip.

It's really critical for the government departments that deal with housing to immediately and decisively take action to address the current housing situation. This should be the absolute number 1 priority right now for every level of government. This is an unacceptable situation. Everyday people are dealing with constant uncertainty, the threat of homelessness and an inability to get a roof over their head. The stress of having no where to live seeps into every part of your life and affects people significantly.

I think that if you get more certified builder's and allocate land for it this could be a very good solution

I’ve been looking into purchasing a harbor freight 4’x8’ trailer to build out. Originally I thought my family and I would only use it for camping and towing behind our SUV, but now I plan to build it out to be big enough for a family of five to live in. I just need to make sure it’s under 14’ tall so that it can fit under most bridges. The camping gear/batteries/appliances alone will be the same cost as the trailer itself.
Next, I hope to save enough money writing novels on the road. Once I have enough money, I am going to purchase a $5,000 acre of desert to homestead. Once I establish a water collection system and chickens, I’ll feel accomplished and rich!

The satire is SO good in this video. The comments were making me second guess whether it was a joke or not.

The goverments all know that if a large portion of the population were to truly be affected by this to this extent, there would be an uprising everywhere and they know that; so they're slowly systematically doing this to people and that's what makes it scary and sad.
