I understand that there were many factors contributing to this crash. However, I am wondering if all airlines at the time became introspective with regard to their pilot regulations that might lead to being in excessive hurry and anxiety. I know they have a business to run, but putting pilots in an anxious state due to company regulations rarely is a good strategy.

It completely disgusts me that an horrific incident like this is depicted as pilot error! Both of those planes should have been sitting empty on the tarmac and their passengers safe inside the terminal! Why would anyone send them onto the runway in that kind of peace soup fog?!!!!

Never been on a plane I don't think I want to but you can end up in a car accident just saying

that one person that refused to board the klm flight is really lucky.

My heart hurts for the loved ones left behind. I had read many passengers on the PanAm were retirees from Pasadena and Hancock Park in L.A. area. 🖤

I understand that flying a plane is not like driving a car. BUT they are on a airfield with more space and view than any where else. But they still taxi and keep going forwards into an on coming plane that is huge why would you they cannot claim they did not see it.........................just abort and tax on the grass instead they fly at each other and these are supposed to be intelligent people.

Such an avoidable tragedy. Remind me never to fly KLM. And that Tour Guide certainly had an angel on her shoulder that day.

I suggest, whenever low visibility exists and there are more than ONE aircraft on the runway/s then the ATC MUST not communicate AT ALL with ANY aircraft awaiting take off clearance except "Standby Standby".

I was a Dental Surgeon in Escondido California, and two of my patients, a lovely married couple, were killed on the Pan Am flight. I remember the very sad days when the airlines, and the family members were contacting me for their dental records. It is strange how events, and history, can wrap around you, and enfold you, when in actuality you have nothing to do with the real event. This was🥺the controllers fault again. They communicate poorly say things like "ok" but doesn't mean they could take off? Only a pilot should be in the controllers seat. They would be the only 1 who care. Plus, the controller acted like the pilot was stupid cause he didn't know where the C3 run way was. I never saw it either! It's not even marked!

The picture taken of the Pan Am´s first officr is from the accident site. it´s one of several whre he is attmpting to help survivors of the collision after having climbed out of the remains of the cockpit himself. Quite a man!

I've heard the story about a tour guide in Gran Canaria called Rubina who was travelling with her friends (also tour guides) back home in KLM flight 4805 after a meeting at Amsterdam. She was planning on visiting her boyfriend in Tenerife after landing, but since the plane had already landed at Tenerife, she decided to not board the aircraft again even though her friends told her to, breaking the airline rules. In the end, it was love that saved Rubina's life. RIP to all passengers of the KLM and Pan Am flights who lost their lives in this tragic incident 💔

This accident is still taught in commercial aviation schools around the world because of the multiplicity of factors that went into it, such as the heterodyne interference with the radios, attempting to take off below visibility minimums, lack of ground control, "go fever," and inappropriate instructions being given (such as the use of a backward taxiway to exit the runway and nonstandard language). But the granddaddy of all was lack of crew resource management. Van Zanten had absolute authority in his cockpit and that's a recipe for disaster; one misheard communication was all it took to kill almost 550 people. It took some time after this before airlines were forced to give cockpit crews equal authority: A captain, even as esteemed as Van Zanten, would be severely disciplined or fired today for not listening to his co-pilot's clear warnings, and co-pilots have the authority to directly take control of the airplane if their captain is making a disastrous mistake - in fact, it is their DUTY to do so.

My ex boss in Dubai was Dutch. One day when we were out having a few drinks he told me this Dutch captain was his fathers brother….didn’t talk about it again. Just that.
