How ridiculous all this is
Black women have been straitening their hair for ages to look like European women and no-one accuses them as culturing appropriation

I'm open minded, not racist at all, I love other cultures... and sorry but this is bs

I've been quite depressed lately, found this festival thinking "wow amazing, this is the place where you can actually experience something deeply truly good for once" but then I see this video and all my hopes are gone xD pass me the rope....

Oh, shut up!!!!! I have never told anyone what to wear or not wear. I will wear what I like. I'm not an idiot, I know what cultures things come from. I don't get dressed to make fun of or appropriate anything. Should only Americans be able to wear t-shirts and jeans?!

To define something as cultural appropriation, you first need to define what is associated exclusively to a given culture. Just be careful that you don't run afoul the 'No true Scotsman' fallacy as you're doing that. Also you must be omniscient as to whether or not your culture didn't end up appropriating it's jewelry and attire from another culture that it had subjugated 6300 years ago. Actually, we should all stop wearing clothing altogether, because we don't know for sure that any of it wasn't appropriated from a culture other than our own sometime within the past 200,000 years. As we all know cultural appropriation is as bad as racism and sexism. So why take the risk? No more clothing, cellphones, computers, tractors or wind turbines. We want to be as culturally sensitive as possible.

All humans came from Africa
Africa should rule humanity, while humans die first today in Africa from basic poverty.

All world civilizations should be run by the middle eastern Indian and Chinese as they invented the first civilizations of
Despite them being today ranked one of the lowest on human rights of the world in the regions.

Who is at fault for their problems ? Many believe those who culturally appropriate the most. Which are the richest msot developed and most high achieved human rights countries like the Protestant western countries and Japan. They are the thieves in their eyes. The most culturally barbaric as they should be.

Those who cultural appropriate the most will become the most developed in the long run. Those who desire to keep gatekeeping cultural appropriation will decline in the long run.

The masters of the past will become the savages today.
The savages of the past will become the masters today.

And yet we humans live today in a random timeline, and then we ceased to exist forever after death? 😔

There was something on this on the radio yesterday and it was ridiculous. What it amounted to was that white people couldn’t do anything without being criticised, but people of colour could do what they liked.
In the case of white people, it was always cultural appropriation. In the case of people of colour, it somehow wasn’t.
Totally absurd

I think the biggest issue is that the people in this video opposed to cultural appropriation keep referring to the other culture as one block - 'the people of that culture are not happy with you wearing X' - So who is the voice of that block of 'people'? Aren't we once again reducing races and ethnicities to a monochrome 'voice' that says ONE thing? Aren't the 'PEOPLE' of that culture INDIVIDUALS? WTF guys. SO we all need to stick to our little ethnic boxes that we happened to be born into. This sounds like my ultra nationalist/racist cousins who would never even try a different culture's food cuz it's not OURS. Seriously? P.S. What about when someone converts to another religion? Historically in some religions that was a great thing - the more followers the better. Or when someone marries someone from a different culture and loves that partner's culture- NOT ALLOWED? FFS

Good example of cultural appropriation is when African Americans use the "N" word in rap or in their speech. The meaning of the "N" word and the way it was originally pronounced has been pervert to mean something hateful.

This whole topic is such nonsense. The only reason why human beings have buildings, vehicles, phones, internet, etc... is because of different cultures borrowing and learning from each other. If not, now we would all be still living in tribes and trading goats for pigs.

a -- a nose ring (a bull's ring to be precise)
b -- a tatto of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti
c -- lipstick

I don't think any of this is part of her "cultural heritage". Hypocrite! Fortunately, you find such in all cultures so she can wear the compliment.

What alot of people aren't understanding is the fact that the stuff people are appropriating now are things that could have got those cultures killed back then and did get them killed, so when people not from that culture wear it as a trendy fashion statement it's a slap in the face to those people who got oppressed and probably still do for participating in their culture, also some things can have a very very deep meaning to that culture so you by wearing that thing are disrespecting a whole ass culture.
If the people of that culture say don't wear it don't

Almost everyone around the world is over the moon if people from other countries wear their traditional outfits/learn their language/try to cook their dishes/have interest in their culture in general. It's only really Americans that find it offensive.

I think the reason is pretty obvious, America doesn't have its own culture as it is a young country. Instead, everyone jealously guards whatever little remains of their ancestors culture they can scrape, after generations of living in the US. That's all they have.

Americans don't really care about the country they actually "come from". A little hint - for most people around the globe, if their culture is in vogue, it boosts tourism and economy of their countries in general. So not only are they willing to share it, they also make actual effort (including spending huge budgets) on making it as popular as they can. Talking about "cultural appropriation" makes these efforts futile. Not to mention, even inside the US, it only divides the society more, if it wasn't already. That's tribal mentality at its worst. Just accept that you are Americans, and you have no right to speak on behalf of other countries and cultures (as though you really understand them) if you were born and raised in the US and your native language is English. Thank you.

I think there is appreciation, appropriation, and misappropriation, these areas are all different in there intentions and others perceptions of these may all vary. Misappropriation is the intentional taking of culture with the idea of calling that item yours. Appropriation is taking a cultural item and using it perhaps a way not intended and appreciation is correct and respectful use of another culture normally for educational purposes.

American hip-hop culture for example is misappropriated all over the world by individuals that have no understanding but enjoy how cool it looks or enjoy the slang. However no one seems to mind usurping their struggle for money and fame. England seems to be having a post colonist identity crisis, what is the British idea concerning 2nd or 3rd generation culturals that aren't either British nor their original? We see this in the USA with 3rd generation Chinese Americans. They are seen in the USA as Chinese but in China they're seen as American. Language and culture change quite a lot in 50 years. Being raised somewhere else even in a community that is culturally homogenous still can yield vastly different rituals than that of the individuals that are still in country.

What everyone needs to remember is that these cultural and national lines are fuzz and New at best and we are all citizens of this earth so let's try to include people instead of exclude people. If someone is appropriating your culture, teach them what it means to you and turn that appropriation into appreciation.

If you are someone who doesn't like it when someone appropriates your culture please remove your jeans 👖 right now because you don't want to share your culture so why I should I share mine with you.

But isnt cultural appropriation what brought us so far? Humans learnt from each other and that is why god made different groups of people so we can learn from one another. getting offended by cultural appropriation brings division, not unity. Besides, if someone wears something from your culture, wouldnt you be happy that your culture has been acknowledged by other people. It's not disrespectful to bring awareness to a different culture than your own. People are so sensitive nowadays

Interesting the music on this piece has Roland drum sounds, a Japanese invention, which black musicians in New York and Chicago and Detroit used as part of a sound in a new genre of music that spans the world and has been used adapted and repurposed by many cultures since then, blending and evolving across the world. I wish everyone would stop agonising about cultural appropriation and differences and focus on togetherness and commonality. There was a great documentary on Channel4 around 15yrs ago that predicted the negative effect of focussing on differences between cultures would have on social cohesion instead of the positive effect of focusing on similarities would have, but still respecting differences. Various people from different cultures and races in the UK predicting the angst and division we see today. Wise people who we should have all paid attention to.
