What's even scarier is the fates of the uranium girls -- the ones painting the uranium onto the watch hands, licking their brushes between strokes to bring them to a point, constantly surrounded by the radium powder day in and day out. They died. Not before they were able to at least file a lawsuit and start the process of defending themselves and preventing others from suffering the same fate.

The coating of Radium is called a lume. I have a Russian watch that may still have the original Radium lume and another that may have a substitute. It's still probably the best lume material not just due to how well it illuminates, but for how long it will.

Not really concerned about it, though, since at most it might cause Radiation Hormesis.
