Don't know if you have already, but Lucy starring Scarlet Johansson is an audio visual treat, well worth a review, if you have could you send me a link please. The sharpness of the Blu-ray is almost 4k 🙃

I've just picked up Dune 1+2 on Blu-ray, and they have an Atmos and a Dolby digital soundtrack, which is odd as most of them have Dts. Is there much difference in the 4k bluray and Blu-ray Atmos quality, as far as you know? Just out of curiosity, as I'm not thinking of upgrading 🙃

I'm not a fan of these films, John, although beautifully made I feel they are fatally miscast in the two young leads - especially Timothée Chalamet who simply does not have the ''gravitas" to play a leader of men who will become the saviour the Wole planet. then the director surrounds him with powerful male actors like Xavier Bardem, Jason Balboa and Josh Brolin to emphasize the point. DAVID LYNCH'S 1984 version was a mess. but what a magnificent mess!.. ONE I WOUD MUCH RATHER SIT THROUGH. My new home cinema is fnished (I built it myself), and rounded things off by bying an. EPSON EH TW 9400 4K 3D Projector and a YAMAHA Dolby Atmos amp .as im 67 this wi probably be my last home theatre ugrade. THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER EXCELENT VIDEO. MICHAEL SOUTH AFRICA.

Nice1 John 👍I saw this in the IMAX at Ashford and thoroughly enjoyed it. I expect I will begrudginlgy purchase this 4K at some point but I gotta say I'm disappointed that the UK release doesn't include the Blu-ray and as a result feels over-priced. I wish they'd maximized the bitrate on the 4K and then included the movie and extras on a Blu-ray. 😞

Great disc, even in 'cropped' cinemascope the visuals are still stunning. I also love your screen masking system! it's something of a lost art these days In most cinemas unfortunately.

YES!!! I completely agree about the darkness in Dune. I picked up the 3D Blu-Ray initially and I couldn't see anything for much of the film. The sandworm scene was by far the worst though. I tried it on my 3D projector, a 3D TV, even a VR headset but I couldn't find a way to watch it so I could see what was going on. I gave up on that and purchased the 4K disc and although it's better, I still feel as though it's too dark overall. It's a great transfer but I just wish it was brighter by default.

I agree it's expensive without an accompanying Blu Ray. Also, we don''t get the additional digital extras with a redeemable code that the US did, so doubly so.

Hi John, thanks for taking a look at this one. It's been a while since I left you something in the comments, although I've been watching and enjoying your content!

If at all possible, I'd greatly apprecaite getting your take on Ridley Scott's "The Last Duel" on 4K. I was drawn in by the film, but I wasn't blown away by the 4K picture, especially given that it was shot at 4.5K like most of Dune 2 here (I could be wrong but that's what Ive heard). Not to disrepect the craftmanship, mind you, the picture is refined and the colours are natural - it's just perhaps not as sharp as I'd expected. Now, the sound, that's another story altogether - top notch stuff!

Overall, it's a great package with the writing, direction and performances being some of the best we've seen in a Scott film for quite some time in my estimation. Additionally, the 4K comes with a blu ray and has a nice length making-of documentary that you might apprecaite.

Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦!
I bought the 4k bluray and watched it at home. I couldn’t find time to see it at the theatre. Initially I was a little mad that the bluray doesn’t have the IMAX aspect ratios, but man did I disappear into this movie! Thankfully the kids were in bed and we could crank the volume and not have any interruptions. Was thinking about this movie for a couple days after watching it. Which I think is a sign of a great movie.

got to see this one in dual laser at the Austin Bullock Museum and it looked spectacular. What I've gathered from people who saw it in both 15/70 and in dual laser is that dual laser was the better experience of the 2. I just wish they had preserved even the IMAX 1.90:1 aspect ratio on the home release, as the entirety of the film is in a mix of 1.90:1 and 1.43:1

I still haven’t purchased part 1 yet, I think I may just wait and eventually pick them both up in future offers or on the second hand market. I enjoyed them, but I didn’t love them, there was a feeling of the movies being stripped away, especially of elements like the guild navigators which expand the scale of the universe in which it’s set (hoping we’ll see the universe expanded in pt 3 which is expected to be called Messiah after the second book). I actually have Arrow’s 4k release of David Lynch’s 1984 version, which I grew up watching a lot, and though it’s got a lot of things in it which don’t work exactly, there are many things I felt that, especially compared to pt 1, it managed to do better in some ways, or at the very least included where Villneuve has left them out altogether (like the aforementioned guild navigators).
But what REALLY makes my reconsider buying pt 2 especially is the lack of an expanded edition released for pt 2. I didn’t see pt 1 in Imax so no idea if the imax had an expanded ratio, but i did see pt 2 in imax, and it was a gorgeous movie, with many expanded sequences, and it’s just such a shame this hasn’t been included on the home release (I’m still holding out for the expanded ratio of the Tom Cruise movie Oblivion which was expanded to 1.85:1 including a LOT of beautiful effects, for pretty much the whole movie in imax from a 2.35:1 aspect), and not including these versions on even the 4k disc is a crime against cinema IMO.
I’m also put off slightly from the price of a new release with them only including the 4k disc and not the blu ray version (which I believe IS included with it in other countries). I love watching in 4k, but I watch things in other rooms too or in bed and don’t have 4k setup in all rooms, so for the price tag I feel that i’m getting a better deal. I don’t for that kind of price with just the single 4k disc. It gives me pause for buying it, and waiting for it to be included in an offer, or wait to see if the imax version was released in other countries to be able to import (as has happened before with some movies)..
Andrew.

I agree with you on the need to understand the story line before watching Dune 2. I was lucky to be able to catch the first Dune when re-released just prior to Dune 2 … so got to see both on the same Odeon IMAX in Cardiff (a cinema I recommend for quality, comfort and friendliness).
With my fond memories of the books, I was swept into the other-worldliness you describe … and loved both films. However, the friend I saw the 1st movie with was unimpressed. We agreed that we both struggled to follow the dialogue and, unless you knew what was happening, it could drag in places. Too much whispering of lines accompanied by the strong general sound field. I had no such problems with Dune 2 and thought it a superior production as a result.
The saddest part is the wait for part 3 😢.
Whilst I love the IMAX experience, in my mind, it is simply not realistic to reproduce it in the home environment. As a result, for home viewing, I prefer the full widescreen format, to the point that I prefer a film be masked accordingly over its full length … I don’t get on with versions that chop between formats. I think you got it spot on when you refer to the magic of a trip to the cinema back in the day … when you were suddenly presented with a panoramic cornucopia of images that were not available on older TVs at home and rarely used in normal photography.
Thank you for your review … I found it considered and thought-provoking. 🤔

Nice one John
I didn't get into the Dune films as yet, will I ever?
But I loved your twiddling around with your screen control and explanation of the difference between format's in that film.
Sometimes the screen image is so dull in some cinemas it spoiles my enjoyment completely.
So I would certainly think of watching Dune at the Waterloo Imax Also wish they would get on with the technology and produce films in full length imax guality and get back to some total 70mm film projection on real 70mm curved screens.
Dreaming for the time being but not lost hope.

Hi John, have you seen 4K Lawrence of Arabia? I don't recall you ever mentioning it, or giving it a review? It is absolutely astonishing: a true reference disc, just like watching it in 70mm for the first time! It's worth the high investment. I saw it originally in 70mm at the OLS, then at the Metropole, Victoria, at a 70mm screening at the Dominion and then the 70mm extended revival in the late 80s at the much-missed Odeon, Marble Arch. I think it's the best 4K transfer ever! Sorry to gone about it, but it certainly exceeded my expectations, and I thought the standard Blu-ray couldn't be improved upon! Cheers.

Thanks John. Glad you appreciate the new 4K release. Long love physical media!

I was fortunate enough to see Dune 2 at BFI IMAX and the Ronson IMAX Theatre (inside the British Science Museum).

Both were awe inspiring experiences. Sublime.
The Science Museum was sharper, richer colours and more modern looking (due to the GT Dual Laser projector and not being scanned back on to film). Unfortunately, the black handrail running along the bottom of the screen was slightly distracting.
The scale of seeing Dune at the BFI IMAX was otherworldly and almost psychedelic.

They used a reticle on the cameras that had a 2.39:1 and a 1.90:1 aspect ratios so to know where the centre would be okay on any of the ratios.

It would be interesting to know if they did the same "shot digitally, transferred to film, rescanned digitally" process that they did for Part One, which created that grainy, filmic look. On the subtitles, wouldn't they be player-generated, depending on the language chosen? On the Imax print they would have been "burned in" and positioned centrally to keep them in your line of sight, rather than having to look towards the bottom of a very tall image. I assume any dull look to the subtitles on the disc is because you turned your lamp down because you felt the image was too bright.

Hi John! I will buy this for sure but not in a hurry. Seeing it in cinema was great and so once the price is relaxed a bit i'll scoop it up. Meantime I see Oppenheimer beginning to drop in price a bit so time to add it first. I have re-visited some of DV's films recently and many have these great sound scores as well. A scene in Sicario of the convoy crossing into mexico was pretty cool. Still big thumbs up for me really love these Dune films and enjoyed this review thanks a lot and hope all is well with you guys Cheers D in BC!!

I just watched this last night. Stunning cinematography. My previous knowledge of the Dune series is just the 1984 movie. I therefore found the ending to Dune Part 2 to be a little bit jarring. Not the same hopeful, happy ending I was expecting, and a "To be continued..." message at the end wouldn't have felt out of place at all.
