Marc it's worth remembering that in conservation it's not so simple. In a lot of cases the sorts of places you stayed can also support the local economies and incentivize them to be good stewards of the local environment and its elephants. The trick is to look to see if the animals are healthy and active. If they look super sluggish, show signs of harm or being super timid around people then you know that's a bad place. But the place you stayed seemed like the sort of place that was doing it right.

Besides, while plenty of animals do not do well in captivity, elephants can. They are highly communal animals and learn to love their people as much as their people love them.

And now, a super fun elephant fact: They've observed elephant brains while showing them pictures of humans, and other things, and when they looked at pictures of humans the same part of their brains lit up as does in humans when we look at puppies and kittens. TL:DR; elephants think we're super cute with our small ears and noses. And if that doesn't make your day nothing will.

You're asking the right questions Marc. Fair play for realising and admitting you were supporting something that's not great for the animals. As you say, you enjoyed it, but did they. I also think that horrifying footage of the poor elephants raised awareness of why not to do any Thai "elephant tourism".

Any adult Asian Elephants without tusks are female, occasionally a female may have very short tusks, but they will only be visible when her mouth is open.

Without regret you can visit elephants in a senctuary where they are kept in protected contact. There the animals are usually 'rescued' animals out of abursiv captivity conditions or retired animals. Protected contact means, there is always a massive barrier between the visitors and the elephants and even between the carers and the elephants. As mentioned in the video, really bad is when elephants are chained. But even if they are not chained and there is direct contact between elephants and crarers or even visitors it is really bad for the elephants. It is a life in fear for the elephants as the carers nearby have an elephant hook with them (you can see this thing also one time in the video). Elephants are very sensitive animals and in young age they are 'trained', means it is made clear to them that the hook will cause to them extream pain. This the elephants know for the rest of their life then. This means they have also to be gentle when it contact with visitors and allow also for example to be touched by them. This might look for the visitor as the elephants are happy and even like to be touched. But the elephants do allow this only because they are afraid of the pain the hook can potentially cause. Therefore please visit and pay only for proper senctuaries where the elephants are kept in protected contact and where they can at least enjoy the rest of their life without fear, without fear from the pain of the hook. Even if you don't see chains but what do you think how did they tamed them in the beginning. Elephants are wild animals and if you find them anywhere but wilderness is wrong. There is no question about this.

Alot place in the world wild Animals are on the limit for life, alot of place the only income to help them is from Turist coming a see them.

It’s important especially as travellers to keep in mind some humans are the cruelest creatures on earth and we must keep our eyes open & be the voice for animals with no voice.

Perhaps a good time to reflect and face the hypocrisy of eating meat and supporting untold suffering of other mammals and sentient beings by default ? but much love to you brother for recognising the morality of " The Elephant in the room" although it takes time to realise that which most people take for granted from childhood is not conducive to the heath of our planet, society, personal health, longevity and animals well-being. You show the world how it is. You enjoyed your experience with the elephants that were unchained and you felt they were well looked after. You then rightly pointed out how badly the other elephants were treated. However, this is not your fault. It is something that the Thai government needs to legislate on and tourism pressure groups to act on. There are elephant charities in Thailand and it is a lot better than it was 20 years ago where you had elephants being brought into cities for commercial reasons.

An elephant is a wild animal, captured from the forest, brutally tortured, and then tamed into the form you see.

It’s good to care about the animals we share the planet with, but this is a tough call do you pay and support the elephants weather they are chained or not, or do you not pay towards them being imprisoned for want of a better word, if they were left to roam freely they would be slaughtered for destroying the environment that the Tia people live in, it’s a hard decision to make, there are two animals on this planet I won’t eat other than the weird things some nations eat are Chicken because it’s the most farmed and abused animal on the planet, and lamb, because it is some times only a few weeks old, I also draw the line on veal young Calf’s, great videos both.

I feel your doubt. On the other hand: if tourists get informed also through videos like yours and choose those elephant owners who treat their animal better there is a way to change things. Of course every change takes time. Its like buying more often organic food ;-)

Unfortunately where you are doesn't have a great reputation regarding animals. Humans are the worst species on the planet and I think we probably won't have a long term future. We are so destructive to each other, animals and the environment. We would all like things to change and hopefully in the future things will be different.

Was für ein tolles Erlebnis, Frühstück mit Elefanten. Wahnsinn. Asien ist einfach so spannend und ganz anders wie hier in Deutschland. Die Elefantenhaltung ist ein 2 schneidiges Schwert. Man sollte keine Elefanten halte, aber es werden viele für die Arbeit eingesetzt. Ich persönlich weiß, daß Sie auf Ihren YT-Kanal die Haltung an Ketten nicht unterstützen.
Für mich persönlich ist es spannend zusehen, daß Sie all die Früchte die Wir im Supermarkt als Südfrüchte kaufen können, einfach am Straßenrand erwerben und frisch genießen können.
Die Natur und die Landschaft sind einfach super.
Fahren Sie vorsichtig und bleiben sie gesund und es zeigt sich die Welt ist ein Dorf mit all Ihren Fans und YT Sehern.
