Blast from the past, back in 2015 when I first discovered this hack it was fun. The chip to get however is the 2696V3, this was a OEM chip released around a year after the 2699V3. That has a turbo of 3.8, with an undervolt and BCLK oc you can be boosting to 4.0 during games. Another great chip is a QS version of the 2695V3, that one was quirky that it came with a 3.5 turbo as opposed to the 3.3 turbo. But would boost to 3.6. I think there are a lot of chips like this you just have to track them down.

I can get the x99 killer motherboard, 600w PSU ,32gb ddr4, a xeon 3.6 cpu, and gtx970 for $200, is that a Good deal??

Looking to build a large case I just bought for $10 at Goodwill.
Going to pair with an RX5700xt and play Starfield.

Would this be good for a $400 used build?

What would you recommend for aug 2023? Is it still better to pair 1080ti with Xeon 2699 v3? Any other options?

Definitely an awesome build. I've been playing with an x79 board and a gtx1080. I'm planning on the 1660v2 and hopefully 2133 or 2400 ddr3. But I would love to try x99 and up.

$206 for the 2699 v3 last year? It's $38 right now on Ali Express.

Slap two of these in a Shenzhen Special dual socket X99 board, and that's 36 cores, 72 threads! 90 MB of cache! And with 8 RAM slots on some of those boards, you can load up on cheap older ECC for 64 or 128 GB of RAM for very little money. Not great for gaming use due to latency, but it would still be a great workstation or a virtualization lab box. Not very power efficient, though, with a 290W combined TDP before you add any other hardware to the system.

Hi, ive recently purchased a hp z640 and put a e5 2699 v3 in and wanted to do the turbo boost. I tried to follow instructions from a previous vid of yours but my bios is locked and the hp menu does not offer as many options to change or i havnt explored it enough to find cpu and turbo settings.

OK so don't hate, but can I get one of these 18 core fire it up with my 1080 ti and have it work great for Premier Pro or will I need to hack and overclock etc. like you did? I was thinking of selling my ryzen5 5600 rig since I only use that one for video editing and I could get about $600 for it while I could buy one of these for $200 fully built (except gpu)

Pretty sure TDP limit on the E5-2699v3 is the same as the E5-2696v3 @ 145W. The 2696v3 has a slightly higher turbo-boost (3.8Ghz vs 3.6Ghz) and is compatible with either DDR3 or DDR4; the 2699v3 only works with DDR4.
2696v3 was released about 1 year after the 2699v3.

Is there a even newer “old” server chip that would be better to use now or is this one still the way to go?

I have a Supermicro 1U server with 128GB RAM and two E5-2697V3 cpus for a total of 28cores. Not a gaming machine - no graphics card, but I'm using this for high-performance computing for transistor modeling and circuit design which contains optimization steps that are very compute-intensive. I'd love to see if I can boost the clock rates and performance.

i have a motherboard that supports these cpus and I currently have a E5 v4 18core.. i changed the power consumption from auto to performance and its base clock is 2.3 so it has jumped a whooping .3 to .4 ghz. 2.6 -2.8 on paper it has a 3.0 turbo boost speed but I have never seen it that high. I am curious if this will work for me since these CPUs are so cheap now. I bought mine for $1000 each back in 2017 and I thought that was a smokin deal..LOL..

@Brian Tech Yes City : I was wondering if you could maybe revisit this 2699 v3 CPU but on a x99 Jingsha or Machinist based motherboard? Would the tuning options be similar? Between your channel, myconst and philscomputerlab, got me interested in the Xeons. I built my first used Xeon e5-2650 v2 with 16gb ddr3-1333 ecc in quad channel (x79 Kllisre + the e5-2650 vw & ram came as a combo) + palit 8600GT+ 1GB for video back in Octob er of 2021. This my daily driver, non gaming rig. I currently run Linux Mint 19.3 on it

turn off the hyper-threading and you should be able to unlock a bit more (yes you'll be down to 18 cores.. but yeaaaah)..
Also, if this works in your chip, you should be able to further increase by turning off some cores.

I did this on an E5-1680v2 and got 4.7 all cores aver 6 C/0T. (3.0/3.9Ghz, 8C/16T standard)
I also got 4.4 all core on dual E5-2697v2, reduced to 8C/16T.. from the standard 24C/48T (2.7/3.5Ghz, 12c/24t each)

Note: base clock multiplier seems to like 102-102.3 on the 3 different MoBds I've tried (2x Asus Deluxe x79 and 1x Supermicro X10DAi)
Supermicro board was a bit more finicky.

Result:
the 1680v2 out performed the dual processor config for games
the dual processor config out performed the 1680v2 for work
