On November 11th, 1918, the First World War came to an end with the conclusion of an armistice. When the Germans invaded Belgium in 1914, a million civilians and soldiers fled to the Netherlands. Most returned within a year. However, a large number, especially interned soldiers, remained behind. More than 20,000 of these refugees have been received in Amersfoort. As a thank you for this, in 1917 they built the largest war memorial in the Netherlands on the Amersfoortse Berg.
