paradoxaly, i always found Azura to be the most humane of the gods in her versatility. Other gods are more monolithic, and while theiy are alien beings, are more predictible as they follow a core principle that will always guide their action. By seeking love and acting with spite when her pride is wounded, she feel way more like a person

Despite whether or not they’re supposed to be male or female, I don’t think any of them are called “Daedric Princesses”. Pretty sure Azura is still called a Daedric Prince.

I mean if im to simp for any daedra im sure azura would be the most of it. However the folly of simping is evident, and I'm here purely so I dont have to get nam flashbacks every time I feel like mining soul gems and I'm too much of a cheapskate to buy them, so the star be it pure or dark is the best boon, especially if it prevents the nam flashbacks that is searching for those fucking nirnroots

Imagine that. Imagine being one of three mortals ever to achieve actual godhood, and then having a Daedric Prince not only acknowledge what you've done, but tell you that
"You are blind and all is darkness."
Soul chilling.

The way I see it is that Azura is the daedric prince of concepts like wabi-sabi and the interplay of light and dark, good and evil, pleasant and miserable. There is potentially unforgettable beauty in their dance, equal parts beautiful and tragic, wonderful and terrible. Existential beauty, perhaps? Part of her sphere seems to be the acceptance, maybe even reverence of these imperfections for what they are. What was once unique and beautiful in its own right begins to lose its identity in trying to become ideal -- something she seems to despise.

Her ultimate motivations seem to be laid out in Khajiiti myth, as she was not only Fadomai's daughter but her closest confidant, and appears to hold the dreams and hopes of her mother in high regard in spite of her rivalry with Nirni. Perhaps in hearing her mother speak of love, war, unrealized hopes and dreams on her deathbed, Azurah came to appreciate all too late these unrealized futures that her mother had envisioned, no matter how much they made her ache and cry. She came to love and care for it all in hearing her mother speak so lovingly of Nirni's future children and grandchildren -- their names, their imagined (foreseen?) triumphs and tragedies. As Azurah wept, she consciously or subconsciously began to build the lunar lattice around Nirni -- the legacy that Fadomai loved so much -- to protect her and her grandchildren -- and many of her later actions could be attributed to the same motive, even though it ultimately pushed Fadomai in her final resting place in the Void from her. She had resolved that she would love and protect creation, warts and all -- but possibly only for Fadomai's sake.

In essence, she likely sees herself as the exclusive keeper of Fadomai's legacy -- the one with the last say on what that entails -- and any who encroach on that vision or scorn her authority on it tend to get on her bad side pretty quickly. Maybe Azurah is even bitter that she was never so beloved by her mother in life as Nirni and this manifests in her vanity, wanting to be loved by all who follow her. She may not even truly love Nirni or her children, but in some way she has accepted her admittedly somewhat tragic role and she expects this of her followers as well -- if you cannot fully accept others, at least accept yourself and see the beauty in it, warts and all.

It's no wonder then that she helped lead the Chimer from Summerset, and could also be compared to Malacath in that regard. The Tribunal's later theft of power from the Heart of Lorkhan is then betraying not only Azura in usurping her power over the Chimer but adding insult to injury in going directly against Padomay's legacy by casting off their imperfections (mortality, etc.) in pursuit of the ideal. Add to that how Lorkhan is likely a very sore subject for Azura given that it could be said that he was the one who doomed her mother and took her away from her... it was a very bad idea to claim power from such a thing when betraying her in nearly the same breath, and how she is likely responsible for the disappearance of the Dwemer in also toying with his Heart.

Azura is wise but cruel -- and she may only have that wisdom thanks to the hopes and dreams that Nirni shared on her deathbed. Hers is the acceptance and encouragement of the imperfect, helping us to venerate the dreamily-distant, reflected light and finding it far more beautiful and accessible than its source.

Dusk and Dawn, Moon and Sun, Light and Dark, Wrath and Love... I think Azura is the daedric prince of duality and change. I think her depiction of ruling over day and night cycles is not literal- its a portrayal of her embodiment and control of abstract and sometimes conflicting dynamics. I think its interesting her realm is one of incomprehensible beauty and awe-- as every daedric sphere we see is hellish to some extent. The beauty of moonshadow is so enticing it makes those who witness it never want to retuen to the real world, and i mean, why would they? Before their very eyes is a world so tranquil and beautiful, ruled by a goddess-mother who is protecting and caring, only asking for love and devotion in return. Moonshadow represents duality which again, I think Azura embodies; a realm of hazy beauty starkly contrasting the harsh realities of real life. Moonshadow is not meant for mortals but is an enticing concept nonetheless, a contrast between a life of hardships and a dreamy, alluring place. Whats even more intriguing is that, as mentioned, Azura technically played no part in the creation of the world. Its ironic she's so invested in and revered for things she basically had nothing to do with-- but that plays into her duality theme even more: not quite here, but not quite gone either, not entirely removed yet not very attached. While Azura displays blessings and protections, when angry her power is great and terrible, unleashing powerful curses and magic upon those who angered her- while her temperament may seem jarring I think it fits well for a semi-deity who embodies change, duality dynamics, and the "in-between" spaces of the universe. Just like the Dusk and the Dawn, Azura is neither one thing nor the other, not a literal concept but not entirely abstract, not particularly evil or entirely good, not fully meta-physical but not of this world either. Like the Dusk or Dawn are between the creep of night and the glory of day, she is the in-between. She rules the space between light and void, good and evil, physical and spiritual, tangible and non existent. Azura is the master of the unseen and unformed, she is the space between one seemingly unrelated thing and the next. Dualities are often made of conflicting elements, the push-and-pull of what forms a dynamic relationship: both things are opposed in their interest but ultimately need the other thing in order for the greater whole to function. And I think Azura is those elements, or at the very least, the relationship between them. So I guess it can be said that to a degree, she is ambient energy, the vector of change and motion. Which is why I think the powers of curses and alteration are very fitting of her--change has no motive, is abstract just as much as it is literal, and it drives the world, for better or worse.

It's odd how in fiction God's are always extremely nuanced and complex and never truly good or evil where as in ancient religions gods were cruel and mercurial and only revered for their power and perceived authority which was derived from their power. Yet modern gods are loving, peaceful, benevolent, and viewed as a nurturing parent..... except for when they aren't those things.

I wonder if this can provide insight into the collective human psyche on how we view life, the world, reality, and our selves with how we portray God's in fiction and how we have portrayed God's in reality throughout time.

One thing I like about Azura is she's maybe the most "human" Prince. It feels like if you leave her alone, she's likely to leave you alone. Do right by her and she'll usually reciprocate, but screw her over and she'll come at you with all the power she can bring to bear.

Really, I think that describes most of us mortals pretty well, too. (Edit to fix typo)

The Elves calling the human and beast races reckless, unstable or arrogant is pure projection, Nord suspicion and hesitation towards magic, daedra, ancient artifacts and unknown powers shows wisdom in the long run and explains how they created the most successful and stable leaders of the Empire starting with Talos.

Elves have already lost two races (dwemer and snowelves) to infighting and playing with powers beyond their understanding, two others were cursed (dark elves and orcs) by their actions, wood elves become cannibalistic eldritch horrors that risk their entire civilisation, high elves destabilised the empire in through their unfounded supremacy ideology seek to make themselves immortal believing themselves to have once been gods (peak delusion). Dunmer despite having already been cursed for their shite behaviour want to challenge the Altmer for position of worst elf by enslaving argonians and then when forced to stop by the Ebonheart Pact immediately fill their plantations with Khajiiti slaves.

Khajiit just want to trade and follow their culture, Argonians just want to protect the Hist and BlackMarsh and their traditions, seeking to restore their once great civilisation. Nords just want to survive and follow their faith and traditions in their homeland, many wanting it to exist in peaceful isolation from the Thalmor and their oppression. Imperials just want to play Empire and prior to Elven sabotage and corruption allowed all nations to exist under fair and tolerant rule that allowed all races to flourish.

Elves are the biggest threat Tamriel faces and the man and beast races should unite again mer oppression and corruption.

It probably occurs to Azura that she is one of the lesser feared daedra. Of course she wants love and devotion but she will be aware that many mortals would see that as a sign of weakness. With fear comes respect. There is no room for any humbleness when a mortal disrespects a daedric Prince.

She's a powerful Prince first and a lover second. Disrespect her, she won't let you forget that. I imagine to survive among other daedric princes, one has make an example of disrespectful mortals.

I don't think I could ever bring myself to worship Azura. It's the story of the Little Red Hen all over again.

"And who will help me build this realm?", said Lorkhan.
"Not I!", said Azura.
"And who will help me sustain this realm?", said Lorkhan
"Not I!", said Azura.
"And who will help me receive worship from the creatures of this realm?", said Lorkhan.
"I WILL!", said Azura.

i think to Dunmer azura would represent self love and the love of ones family since she wants you to love her (as a metiphorical mother figure) and yourself, this is why she hates deception but stands in the dunmer pantheon with mephala and boethia, if you merge some of their principles together you get something like:

you should be loyal to clan and family and push the interest of yourself and your family and not betray them (azura)

but to use deception lies and betrayal to further the interest of you and your family is good (azura+mephala)

and you should be strong for yourself and your family because life is harsh and a test of ones mettle (azura+boethia)

I love Azura, she is so fascinating once you get into her.

I always wondered why Azura allied herself with Boethia and Mephala - both of which uses dichotomy to present themselves to mortals, literally in Mephala's case. Boethia; the perfect warrior without honour. Mephala - personification of power and advancement within society (sex, lies and murder) as well as maintenance of said society.

But Azura always seemed extremely one-sided at first glance - the vain Prince who desires attention.

She is Dusk and Dawn - Twilight. She isn't committed. Ambiguity is an important part of her nature.

The only real question is what is she so conflicted about and I think it IS to do with her relationship with the mortal races.

One one hand she wants to be loved as the Aedra are and for this reason she may be regretful for her lack of participation in the creation of Nirn.

On the other hand Azura wants to be loved for being recognised, not out of obligation like the Aedra. She wants to be rewarded, hence why she is so much more connected with the Dunmer than Mephala or Boethia. Whilst Mephala and Boethia had the biggest impact on the Chimer in the beginning, Azura stayed with the changed ones all along the way, becoming more and more invested in politics and culture than even Mephala, who made the structure that led to the Great Houses.

I also find the statue of Azura interesting. She is holding the Moon and a Star which can symbolize Lorkhan and the Magna ge. I think it possible that Azura is trying to continue their work to further help the mortals of Mundus, carrying on where Lorkhan left off.

Or she feels herself to be more rewarding than either as the Magna ge left halfway through and Lorkhan was killed.

Or she holds a level of respect for the architects of Nirn and desires to help protect their influence on the realm. This would explain her extreme reaction over the tribuneral tempering with the heart of Lorkhan. In her eyes they have not just disrespected her, Mephala and Boethia, but also Azura's idol.

I have appeared to of waffled on further than I've ever intended.
