I'm 60 and have been surfing since I was 16. At around 18 years of age, I realized that I didn't like surfers. Unfortunately, if you surf, you have to be around surfers. My golden rule is that you can't assess someone's character on land ... instead, you have to judge them on how they are in the water. Because most of the A-hole surfers are somewhat decent on land.

Actually the dude you made that videos with, is exactly one of the guys you’re talking about. I spent 4 months in Raglan, surfing very defensive, showing respect to all the locals and natives and tried to share good vibes in the water but he was just always seemed angry, would not greet back, share a smile. He got really angry a few times when people accidentally dropped in on him and took ever set wave on his 15 ft log without ever doing a single turn. In these videos he seems like a completely different person.

I really don't mind when surfers act like this. we need people to regulate the lineup. its helpful if the ones who are acting in this way are not actually from that location, because it gives locals a chance to relax, while others take the responsibility of regulating the line up more seriously. I figure everything you do is a reflection of you, so you can really see someone’s true nature in the lineup. It’s a place where character is truly displayed for all to see. It’s why so many don’t care about Medina; he’s a straight up pig in the lineup. Doesn’t matter how many world titles you have, they entitle you to nothing special in the lineup. Yes you may be a ‘world champion’ but at the cost of all respect.
