Live Review - Grand Seiko 'White Birch' SLGH005

I just bought a Grand Seiko SLGH005 White Birch and it changes date at 12:04am, is something wrong with it.

Do you think that the Grand Seiko SLGH005 White Birch is a good investment, do you think that it will keep its value or even increase in value if you decide to sell it in years to come.

Japanese robots do a good job, but I prefer Swiss ones

What do you think on adding to a leather band?

I must disagree about the "true GMT" complication being better. I have a 16710, and if I were doing it again, I would go for a 16700 I think. The reason being, as someone who rotates constantly, and someone who doesn't wear some of my watches for weeks at a time occasionally, the quick date function is more convenient than the jumping hour hand (which necessitates jumping the hour 24 times for each date correction - which can get up to over 300 clicks if you have to go through half a month), and the rotating 24 hour bezel negates the need to split the gmt hand from the local time. I also talk about this is some of my videos, but the fact that the GMT master only has a 12 hour dial, it only ever actually tells up to t2 timezones at any moment, so the "true gmt" aspect doesn't come into play by my estimation .....

To RR's point - I think unlike most luxury brands, the majority of people who are going to buy GS are already watch nerds and don't need to be sold on anything as they already know what they want.

Also - I'd argue that there's plenty of brand cachet with GS, at least among watch crowds.

It's a great watch and really stunning but I would never pay $9k for it. I'd rather spend the $9k on a long cruise.

This GS holds so much more personality than a hulk.

Nice review Bruce. Good to see an improved bracelet as this was their achilles heel. I own a sports gmt spring drive sbge255 and the bracelet just doesn't feel solid

Hey Bruce, when I first started hearing about Grand Seiko, I thought to myself, well it's just like an upgraded Seiko. Over the years though, I have come to love them so much as their own brand, and I even like the fact that they share the same name with regular Seiko (which I also love). Definitely a very, very cool under-the-radar kind of thing. Thank you for this video, and what a great watch. Your dad will love it.

Great Video Bruce. This watch is hot but the anniversary SLGH003 is way more special because it’s the first SS GS with the new 9A movement.

Favorite non-swiss watch? A Lange & Sohne Lange 1. Favorite watch period? A. Lange & Sohne Lange 1. My grail watch and the one I am saving for to mark my retirement in 5, 6 years.

Best 6K watch? A couple Omegas listed but probably the best Omega option at that price omitted. The Aqua Terra.

I thought when I first saw this definitely my first GS . Then I saw the price and thought no way . I’m not saying it’s not worth it . But I don’t get the huge price hike . I really don’t trust the seiko corporation as I think their price rises have been ridiculous over the last few years .. Agree with you people do tend to sell . Still not the greatest bracelets or clasps .. At present you are still taking a huge hit on GS time will tell if this changes . Out with Japan and the watch community they are still pretty much unknown and unappealing . Will this change who knows ...

Great video! Exactly Bruce, I have bought four GS in the past and none of them lasted more than a year in my collection. Be prepared to lose a lot of money when you sell them. I bought all of them new 😥. My Marinemasters have better resale value than my GS.

Terrific stream / video BW. I have the SBGJ201 Hi Beat Iwate and love it ......but hell, this White Birch is just mesmerising. I own some other nice pieces including Rolex and feel that the SBGJ201 leaves them all for dead in terms of finishing. Only reservations for me are thickness and the bracelet. This white birch easily puts itself ahead of many "top" brands, the reduced thickness and incredible movement finishing justifies the price. Your Dad nailed it with this. I own the snowflake so i know how great the finish on these watches are. I would like to see grand seiko improve on the bracelet to match the quality of the watch. Sort of the opposite of rolex, nothing special about finish or movement, but a great bracelet (i wear a batman).

I purchased 4 GS watches without ever having owned a Seiko. Now I am backfilling my collection to include some Seikos. I have no negative feelings about the connection between GS and Seiko.

Finally GS bother to dress up their mvmt. For the longest time I been wondering why all previous models there mvmts is....... rather plain & uninspired.
With this new mvmt, it looks good.
