Such a beautifully perfect movie.. everyone relates to it and everyone lives it daily. The world keeps on turning huh.

I had the perfect first love. We met in 7th grade and we’re friends then dated in 8th. We were deeply in love but shy. We never got to as my mother took me overseas for „vacation“ to see my father. We never came back. I never got to say goodbye and had no way of reaching him. I was heartbroken for years.

The part of the song when they were kids, oh my gosh it made me cry. I still miss my sweet Matthias. Decades later. I am now 50 as is he. Still separated by an ocean. I lost my native tongue but I daydream sometimes what it be like to see each other even once. To let him know how I tried to come back but I was 14, no other family back home. No job. And then my mother near instantly got terminal cancer and my father whom she left our home country for bailed out on her. I had to care for her and there i was in the USA all by myself. There was no way back. She survived for 4+ yrs with my caring for her. Then the med bills etc. My brother struggled with her death and my mom made me promise to stay to look after him as he became reckless. I had no school degree that would have counted in my home country. Plus I had promised to not leave my brother alone in the USA. … years became decades.

And those two in love kids never got closure. I wonder if he sometimes thinks of me.

An accident took much of my brain. I lost my ability to speak that language. But I still have much to tell him.

Foremost, I am sorry to have broken both our hearts when my family took me away without my knowledge or a goodbye to him. Secondly, he was the gentlest most supportive loving first boyfriend any girl could have dreamt about. Not a single disagreement or unkind word. We were great together and I miss you. ❤

I saw this movie when it came out. Before a lot of these actors made it as “big” as they have but regardless of the actors I love the story, I can relate to it a lot. Hopefully it becomes a cult classic because I will always rewatch it when I can

A real gem of a movie, for several isolated scenes, the numerous love stories, but also for its completeness. This particular scene, thuogh, is what gets me the most. I cry every time....

What a delightful song and scene! This is a sweet love song - and every woman wants to be loved. So every woman in the place is imagining what it would be like to be the subject of the song he's singing - his big hit. Then Elise SEES the lyrics about the funny yellow shoes one or two seconds before he sings the line, and the subtle look of surprise as she realizes. Kate Mara does such great work with this scene - the barely perceptible facial expressions from surprise to embarrassment to bittersweetness to glancing around the room to see if anyone else has realized that it's about her. The lighting and camerawork are great. The follow-up dialogue, with just the right amount of awkward remembrance (so, what ABOUT that parking lot encounter?!? Do tell!) Great video clip!

It's just such an underrated song. In an underrated movie.
And let's talk about a humble character, that he is trying to reconnect with the scroll without any reference to his fame or inspiration. Can we also ponder that no one else who went to school at these two made the connection to the song reference?
