what makes gen z humor so interesting?

A lot of this "Gen Z" is actually late Millennial humour or early Gen Z (depending on how you define it) and no matter how much one-up-manship one does to the absurdity and nihilism of it, it gets stale really quickly. Many Gen Z ers ironically take themselves pretty seriously on their uniqueness of their unseriousness. Also, it depends on country to country.

One more thing, which a guy in the comments pointed out is why Gen Z does this and sometimes get this unfunny is because they were never exposed to a lot of actual funny incl dark humor stuff in the internet made by millennials because they were taken down. Sometimes, the dark humor Gen Z does which it thinks is unique was already done by millennials but they are in the shadowy parts of the internet. This includes nihilistic and surreal layered humour as well, putting irony on top of irony which is actually foundation of trolling as well, again, a late millennial thing. Also, Gen X ers and previous generations were really good in absurd humour. The thing is they didn't have social media to circulate them and you can't expect news outlets to do that.

I wonder how much of Gen Z’s “playful nonchalance” to the absurdist universe of the current world state is just that they’re young and can afford to not take things that seriously. Wonder if most of them will keep the same kind of attitude when they hit 35. Genuinely curious 🧐

im 16 (gen z, ig?), but really dont like the way other young people joke about such important, not funny and tragic topics and always get offended, but i think, after this video ill reconcider some of my thoughts and opinions

Super interesting stuff. I want to add to this by saying, understanding a joke on multiple levels shows familiarity with the internet and its culture. It's a way to differentiate yourself from boomers on facebook. Gen Z added to this by not only including more references but also references to nothing, a sort of red herring. Making you feel like you don't get the joke is part of the joke and you are only able to understand that if you are very familiar with its context.

Gen-z humor in relation to nihilism is just once you reach the bottom you can only go up

I feel like a great example of Gen z humour is Haylee Baylee and her comment section.

The entire video is a Gen Z joke itself, especially the comment section. We be making jokes 24/7 even in the most serious of settings.

But just take a look at this comment section about a video of our humour. It's genuinely civilised and with well thought out comments left and right.

It shows we literally take every serious thing not seriously and the opposite for the other. If that's not irony I don't know what is.

At work my supervisor was talking about "Cody", some guy who was a shareholder of our company, and he said we've never met him, but i replied "really? Y'all never kicked it with Cody back in the day?" And he was like "wait, are you fr? I can't tell if you're being fr or not" and him thinking i was being sincere had the rest of us cracking up

I’m in that weird in between of being an old Gen Z’er or young millennial since the year I was born in has overlap for both. Seeing both sides, I honestly prefer millennial. I work a 9-5 office job now & I’m surrounded by older people, but back when I still did service work, the memes and “jokes” some of my younger coworkers would tell were just…not that funny. Like ok not alll we’re bad obviously, but just so many were very flat or confusing/fast paced I couldn’t even bring myself to laugh most of the time. I feel like it’s the type of humor I would’ve thought was funny as an edgy teen but look back now and kind of just don’t really react to anymore. Does that mean I’m getting old help???😭
