This scene is super confusing. The inspirational music, great speech, Luffy thinking of Shanks and Ace makes you think that he and Blackbeard had some respect for one another as pirates. Yet Luffy and Zoro’s speechlessness and calling him They was odd, like they see him as a threat

Blackbeard is an evil pirate and should not be forgiven after all terrible things he had done. But for a villain, he had an amazing motivation speech, Usually Evil Villains manipulate, gaslight, lies, Hannibal lector way, but Blackbeard wasn’t playing mind games, he told as it is.

Maybe it's his mouthful of pie, but rereading One Piece, I noticed how the first times Blackbeard laughs in the series, it's a "tsu"/"zu" start to the laugh, instead of his iconic "ze" (something I doubt is a translation error, though I'm not reading official translations; "tsu" and "ze" just look too different in japanese for that mix up to happen). When he first uses the "ze" laugh here, Zoro and Luffy pull themselves together and stand up, already serious. There's many things that point to Blackbeard's split personality, but I feel like this one detail, more than any other, is why Zoro and Luffy both took notice of something weird with him. It's hard for people to change how they laugh on the spot. Yeah, it can happen over time and you can be influenced by the laughing you hear and pick up others' habits, but the quick switch in both laugh style and demeanor here are enough to tip off that something's wrong, even without the meta knowledge of Oda's penchant for giving consistently unique laughs to characters.

A lot of people comment on this staredown between them, and how eerie it is. Luffy and Zoro are the only ones to realize how much of a threat Blackbeard is, and I think it has to do with the fact the three of them are conquerors in their own way, and even though they can't see Haki yet, they can feel when they meet their match.

I love that I’m not the only one who feels utterly creeped out by this scene. Luffy’s intense stare, completely silent despite someone seemingly sharing his ideals. Not moving even though Nami calls him multiple times. Even Zoro started moving. And Blackbeard even realizes that he has to turn first. Paired with the fact that they already fought in the bar and had this weird arbitrary disagreement about the pie reveals so much. Looking back it’s so easy to see that Oda told us everything we needed to know in this scene. Like think about it, when does Luffy ever act like this? When does Luffy ever not love food? It’s insane. Masterly done. Oda will be remembered as one of the greatest story writers in history, I’m sure of it.

if theres any scene that would define one piece to a new comer, i would show this scene right before the start of romance dawn, mainly because the point of the story is to follow your dreams, be resilient and rise above all

As much of an idiot luffy is, he’s undeniably one of the greatest judges of character. He can tell just by looking at a person whether they are a friend or foe.

Luffy has a excellent judgement of who he meets, he knew, in spite of agreeing with everything the man said, that there was something wrong with blackbeard. Not just his ambitions or power, but how evil they were.
