Turks couldn't care less about the building. The Greeks (who built the spectacular cathedral) could've destroyed it upon Ottoman invasion but because they valued the worksmanship of their ancestors they decided not to.

Now if, in the future, a war or crusade happens and the Hagia Sophia is returned to its original purpose, you can bet the Turks would destroy the building.

Why? Because deep down they know it's not a product of Islamic engineering, so they do not have have that same connection to it.
