The "year of the Linux desktop" has been there for a while, it is just each year it keeps getting bigger and more prominent. Linux has already passed 1% market share a long time ago, even taking things like chromebooks out of the picture. Last time I checked, Linux (literally any OS with Linux as a kernel), sits at around ~10% market share of desktop computers, which is literally half than that of apple desktop computers currently.

I wouldn't be surprised if I could in 5-10 years use Linux as a real alternative to Windows or Mac OS for serious video and sound post-production work. As a film maker, the only bummer I've ever had is that Linux isn't quite there yet when it comes to actual professional video and audio work.

As I get older, I'm starting to realize that Arch is really the only valid Linux distro. Not because it's edgy or anything, but because the raw shell is the only real value Linux brings to the table. All the UI and other open source bells and whistles on top are all garbage and I'd literally rather use Windows. And I f**king HATE Windows.

I’ve started learning Linux and it really sucks you in. Ive broken it so many times and get really frustrated but I keep going back. Im a freelance 3D artist and need security and stability. I use POP_OS because it comes with nvidia drivers already and is geared towards creatives. Its been so hard learning Linux but have to because you simply cant have forced updates during production or have any data leek out because the NDA’s you have to sign are so hardcore if you leek data. What pushed me is seeing how AI will be integrated into Windows so you can basically kiss security goodbye. Can anyone recommend good learning communities around Linux?

I first tried switching to linux right after win 11 declared its system requirements. Went back after a few days then after a few months tried dual booting , well now nearly after 2years I daily drive only linux. Man there is a learning curve but once you know most of the stuff its so much more powerful than any other os

Ngl, the sheer amount of bloat in modern Windows OS and the nagging, insidious feeling I always get every time I get a new “service update” for it that inevitably comes with a new EULA for me to “okay” away has me eyeing Linux in a serious fashion.

I don’t even code. I may never code at all. I mostly use my PC for games and casual web browsing. But damn if I want everyone to have constant backdoor access to a machine I paid for exclusive access to!

The console is lame and Visual Studio Code is much better than Neovim or Emacs. Fedora is better than Arch.
