Guilty Gear Strive Tier List (Season 3.5)

Expecting a patch so I decided to record this. It's the first time I'm recording a tier list like this, so lemme know what y'all think!

I havent watched the video yet but i hope he doesnt do the funny gun combo a lot... im tired of it

Its crazy seeing people in high level guilty gear replay videos complaining about johnny being bottom 2, and me being 'people don't really say that'. They also say Johnny should be nerfed. To be fair Johnny did win a tournemnt, I don't think hes the best character in the game though but it is pretty crazy seeing him on the absoloute bottom.

while i do agree with a lot of points i just do not get the reason why everyone is putting sin so dam high in these tier lists, maybe as a sin player my pov is skewed. his buttons are not that great in terms of frame data compared to a lot of characters that have similar sized hitboxes, his neutral is severely crutched by elk hunt which is redactable in neutral for 99% of situations. beak driver is beyond bad because of its hurt box, speed, and blockstun. 6k is basically useless when it is fd'd. all of these points tied in with his polarizing match up spread (nago,ram,axl,testament,chipp,sol,leo,ino, these are the worst ones imo ) makes me confused with why hes portrayed as top 1 recently. he does have undeniable strengths but i dont see how they out weigh the negatives.

I was somewhat expecting for you to tell me what kind of character archetype May is as a new player, but I think i'll just call her a half rushdown. She's all offense no defense and her gameplan is pretty much hugging the opponent, getting in and bridging the gaps with dolphin and 3K. But because she isn't technically rushdown and how the pace of the game works, on offense it's like rushdown, on defense it's effectively counter poke.

I always feel like I'm playing a different game than pros when I see lists like this because I don't expect the placements at all

It's been a hot minute since I followed anything guilty gear.

I've been hearing "power crept" a lot lately, especially since dbfz season 3 I believe, but for some reason power crept and extra work seems like it should be reversed. It's no biggy, just in my head power crept stills like the character's solid but no fluff and have to stick to strike/throw and system mechanics.

I got what u mean, but because im old, im processing stuff slower 😅.

Going to toss my opinion in here.
Currently an elphelt that's competing.

She's 100% bracket ruiner tier.
I think elphelt is the perfect example of, if you know how to deal with her she's easy, but if you don't it's impossible to adapt mid-set.

Her knowledge checks and frame-data is funky and while against a best-in-the-world tier she'd be niche, but she can and has destroyed brackets for me that aren't prepared with elp experience.

I would say Anji is straight up better Sin, Asuka is OP in the right hands, Nago is better than people give him credit for, but I understand in tournament, nerves could be a problem for a character that will die if you miss manage his blood gauge, Extra effort should be a category, at the end of the day, at a high level, being high effort doesn't take away anything from those characters strength, I don't get the "bracket runiner" thing, I mean ruining what? they are part of the game and if that category is just there for chars mostly disliked by people then the whole cast but your mains, should be there, look there is bridget is a character that has both the strengths of Ky and Baiken in terms of range and mix, and all the other characters are those who don't play anything alike most of the cast, and I think that is good for diversity, most top tier has pretty much the strike-throw mechanic at his go to win-con, and that is frankly boring, I myselft play both Sin and Faust.

Everybody that hates a character should try them in a tournament or competitive environment and feel how hard players have to work to be up in the higher ranks or topping mid to bigger tournaments with them.

I don’t think you gave Bedman justice, he got buffed, and in the right hands can move like crazy. Testament is very strong as well but keep sleeping 🛏️

I agree, Strive needs more sandbox-y characters like Jack-O. Where you can be more creative with the tools for more diversity in playstyles.

I didn't tired of seeing that combo, but I definitely got tired of listening to the apology, once or twice is fine but more than 4 times is not

Pot still has tons of struggle bus matchups, but at least none of them feel truly helpless anymore and honestly, that's all I ask out of any character really

Millia was in a very bad state at the release of Rev2 and Strive. Fact.
Millia pro scene has lost most of its competitive players over these 5 years. There is almost no one left. LK is one of the most striking examples of this. Fact.
Not a single big victory for Millia in Strive, only a few top 8s that were lost. It's a shame.
Millia has continued to be buffed for 3 seasons, but she is still unoptimized and inconsistent = ineffective in this game. Her disadvantages outweigh its advantages. Fact. If you don't believe me, listen to LK, who called her one of the WORST characters in his tier list of MAIN characters.
Even now he places her below the middle of the list.
Much of the community and bloggers in this game were biased: Leffen, Hotashi, SQ, Latif and many others continue to downplay the characters they play.
It is for this reason that TOP level characters continue to receive buffs and polishes throughout 3 seasons. The nerfs are simply not enough because they are getting stronger and stronger.
Most of the people who argue with me have no points. Empty yapping. Fact.

As a Faust main(I used to play Zato but he became too boring), I feel like his items don't get a lot of credit. I strongly believe that every item, outside of donut of course, more often than not, benefit pace of the match in a noticeable way - even banana peel for example. I've used banana peel more times than I can count to do a suprise scare crow behind the apponent to slip away from the corner hor to simply have something they have to block before dashing towards me. Even if trumpet is picked up by the opponent, I will sometimes use the low hitstun of the minion parade to do a safe K scarecrow behind the opponent to escape the corner, and sometimes even get an unexpected combo.

Calling Goldlewis’ 6P a top class anti air made me lol. Sure buddy. The slowest 6p is top class. Punishable on block and on hit. Xd

Can someone explain more on why Sin is so good? LK didn’t really say much other than good buttons and defense, which seems a little lackluster for the #1 in the game.. especially compared to Goldlewis

I would personally put Anji one step lower. Just because his matchup with Sol is a nightmare and he's a very common character. You wouldn't think it would be, but against a Sol who's experienced in the matchup it's extremely hard to do anything.

Anji's neutral is kinda bad if you don't trick him into hitting your spin, and Sol also has some options to approach which make the fish whiff, and sometimes even whiff punish. But that's not the scary part. What's scary is that you can't stop Sol from getting next to you, and then his frame data destroys you when you don't have any meterless defense options. You can't stop Sol from getting next to you, and at that point not only are you massively disadvantaged, but a correct guess from you is a few jabs into 6H, low damage and reset into situation where Sol still has a slight advantage. While a wrong guess is 33-50% of your life bar into a wallbreak knockdown, despite your tankiness.

And when you are running offense, Sol has the best hitbox on his DP. So while all the DPs are kinda scary, there are some gimmick setups in the corner where you can bait DPs into whiffing while still doing (weaker) offense. With Sol you can't, it's gonna hit you if you aren't blocking.

It's extremely difficult to stop Sol from enacting his gameplan and when he's executing it, your bad defensive options put the risk-reward heavily in his favor. A defensive Ky player is also tough, but Sol's offense is so much scarier. If I wanted to take tournaments seriously, I think I'd want to learn a counter pick just for Sol. He's close to the same level of struggle as release Happy Chaos. Not quite, but close. Still, Anji's in a much better spot than any time before.

Edit: Actually I forgot, HC wasn't the worst matchup Anji's had, it was Zato before nerfs/buffs.

I am not tired of seeing the gun combo. I am tired of you telling me that you hope that I am not tired of seeing the gun combo.

is goldlewis straight up not just the best character in the game?
He consistently will and can win at every level of the game, his gameplan is simple to understand and execute but a nightmare to play against
In tournament he is also exactly what you want.

Sin is a really solid character but his conditioning power, good def and pokes just seem less good than the strengths goldlewis has, maybe its something more valued at top level but for the average celestial player Goldlewis really just seems like he is that guy. You can do 80% of your goldlewis gameplay with just specials and things connected to the dust button, not only is he less effort, not only is he extremely highly punishing but he's just consistent and he just wins.

If Sin is more valued over goldlewis because of his traits then wouldn't sol be as well? Considering both characters just have the tools to play every matchup very well, alongside being hard to get out of bad situations against, ALONGSIDE having some of the best defensive tools in the game but both struggling with being a bit camped.

I feel like its not even hyperbolic to say that you can probably show up drunk as goldlewis into a tournament set and just forget how to play the game and you will still have a decent chance of playing at your usual level, I think you could make an argument that nago is also top 2 for similar reasons. No matter what the situation is in the round, no matter how well you played you can ALWAYS lose to nago and goldlewis, but unlike pot they have insanely strong neutral tools for both advancing onto you, but also controlling space in general without taking unweighted gambles.

I respect the fact that I am very likely saying "this clearly insanely strong top 5 character is stronger than this insanely strong top 5 character", I'm mainly just curious as to what your reasoning is behind not having GL top 1 over sin or if I have taken behemoth brain damage from the celestial eu goldlewis players

If you notice most of Goldlewis's strengths aren't new. In my opinion he has been constantly underrated since release. (Although he was very underdeveloped especially before season 2) The main issues for him are really how he matches up into the popular characters of the version.

Johnny is such a fun character man, just give my guy a poor-man's dashblock, it can still be restrictive (maybe you can only cancel X frames into the dash) but he needs SOMETHING. Literally that single change will propel him to solid midtier or even high tier, but I still don't think he would be a monster like in Xrd, the other characters in Strive are also insanely juiced.

I agree that white wa is weaker on Bedman that other characters but it’s still really important for him. I think the difference is that for other characters white wa is a whole new threat the opponent has to worry about whereas for Bedman it’s more about covering up weaknesses of his.

So I've never played GG or Strive, I'm good learning the game and playing up to a certain skill level with Baiken right? Tier lists don't come into play until a certain skill bracket?
