I moved in March to Kalamazoo and planted 2 bare root rhubarbs about 2 weeks ago and they have green leaves starting! Yay! I'm so excited! I think I'll order some another variety this fall or next spring because I just love it! Thanks so much for your videos, I've learned lots and stated canning after my move also! Love my new life!
ОтветитьI like a little almond flavoring in my rhubarb sauce. Can I add a tsp or so to my sauce before water bath canning?
ОтветитьYou can actually grow that in some parts of Oklahoma. I managed to grow a beautiful crop of bok choy and would love to make some chicken bok choy and mushroom soup. Just as soon as I can find an approved recipe. Don't know where I could find one, do you? Rhubarb/strawberry pie is one of my all time favorites!
ОтветитьMy rhubarb has been growing for over 35 years 😉
ОтветитьI grow the Victoria variety. Love rhubarb!
ОтветитьMy parents used to make sauce out of it. (similar to apple sauce) They would cook it down and add sugar. We often had it with a meal.
ОтветитьMy great aunt used to have a rhubarb plant!
Ответить❤ my very favorite!!!
ОтветитьWhen I was a kid, my grandmother would make rhubarb sauce and serve it hot over vanilla ice cream. It was the best!
ОтветитьCan I freeze rhubarb and canned it later when I have more time???????
ОтветитьI can remember my mom making stewed rhubarb and we would have it warm over vanilla ice cream. Sooo good!
ОтветитьGreat ideas- thank you!!!
ОтветитьI don't think I've ever eaten rhubarb.
ОтветитьI look forward to rhubarb every year for my rhubarb coffee cake! Delicious. Thanks for this video so now I am able to can my rhubarb so I can have the coffee cake all year.
ОтветитьI love rhubarb but had know idea you could can it. So, I need to plant more
ОтветитьIt does pretty well in coastal areas of Oregon too!
ОтветитьRhubarb chutney and salsa please! Would love to see those made
ОтветитьThank you for the video. I have rhubarb to harvest and this gave me different ideas
ОтветитьI'm sitting here eating the last of my rhubarb cake while watching how to preserve the rest of my harvest. 😊 Thank you so much!
ОтветитьWhat is that knife you used?
ОтветитьHi Leisa 👋🏻
ОтветитьHas anyone grown it in NC with any success? I'm living in eastern NC but from N England. I would love to grow some here.😊
ОтветитьI really wish I could grow this but it's to hot here in Florida I miss it so much when I lived in Wisconsin my father in law grew it so much it was a treat for this southern gal!!
ОтветитьThank you doing this video. We love rhubarb but I have only froze it. I am totally going to try this. I canned up your strawberry jam today. Taste so good.
ОтветитьI absolutely love rhubarb!! I will completely be adding that to my pantry ❤
ОтветитьI love rhubarb but it sounds like it won’t grow well in Southern California
ОтветитьLeisa, do you know if I can use rhubarb that was frozen last Spring to do the stewed rhubarb? I have more now, but I'd like to use up what's in my freezer.
ОтветитьWe moved from Minnesota to Missouri and I was missing our rhubarb. I planted the Victoria variety, which I heard does better in warmer climates, and it’s growing and producing beautifully! We planted 4 in a big deep raised bed. I cut it back in the fall and use the leaves to cover/mulch it. Love my rhubarb so much! Thx Leisa ❤️
ОтветитьFunny enough I looked earlier this week for rhubarb recipes and wasn't sure. Thank you Leisa. Yesterday I canned 6 pints and 4 half pints of ugly chicken. 😊
Ответить🤗❤️
ОтветитьSeeing the rhubarb stalks brings back memories of my dad making rhubarb pie most summers when I was young and still at home in Upstate NY...we had a small garden in the backyard and grew rhubarb, tomatoes, bunny rabbits, and rocks! My dad was brought up in a small, rural village about an hour from where we lived, and he likely learned the recipe from his parents, who were both brought up on farms near his family home...
Ответитьhmmmm.....rhubarb BBQ sauce?
ОтветитьCan you can it without sugar and have it boil in hot water?
ОтветитьRhubarb custard pie, rhubarb punch, rhubarb cake, rhubarb-saskatoon pie, rhubarb crisp or just plain stewed rhubarb... love it all, lol. Hopefully my rhubarb will grow and I'll have some in the next couple of years.
ОтветитьLeisa, question. Re headspace, does a jar have to be full when vacuum sealing?
ОтветитьThe first rule of RHUBARB is never plant it. The second is WTF is it good for. The third is WHY. It is just red celery and taste funny. It requires a lot sugar to be eatable.
If it is canned, you only need one jar for an entire year. The partial jar, you could have just added more HOT water.
A pint of Rhubarb is the right size to viciously throw at someone you don't like.
Great video on preserving it. Comments above were in jest. It is actually a good thing to can.
Ha! Leisa, I have JUST this minute put my rhubarb and sugar to steep before canning it later. Try and keep the white part at the bottom of the stalk as that adds to the sweetnes. X
ОтветитьLove love love rhubarb! I’m a Rhubarb purist in my pies. Yum
ОтветитьHow do you use the stewed rhubarb
ОтветитьMine are mostly green, thick & they get the big heads of seeds. I've been able to harvest them 3 times. I think ill be stewing them this year. They take up alot of freezer space. Thanks!
ОтветитьCould you add water up to a half-inch headspace to the jar that was a little short and can it that way?
ОтветитьNATIONAL LEISA DAY,
ОтветитьOh no! I just canned my rhubarb yesterday! I was dying for this recipe 😂
ОтветитьA splash of lemon juice changes the type of tart rhubarb has too.
ОтветитьBy gosh, rhubarb is a hardy perennial that if it has red stalks or ruffled leaves works pretty well in the ornamental garden too. If you lay wettened leaves over the soil surface it does a pretty good job of killing off weed seedlings and some ants too.
ОтветитьI put a stick of rhubarb in my borscht to give it a sour flavors. My Ukrainian grandmother always did that when she made borscht.
ОтветитьLove rhubarb did not know we could can it unto itself!
ОтветитьWe are canning rhubarb BBQ sauce tomorrow. Great with pork or chicken. We did not like it with beef or lamb but maybe you will.
ОтветитьYou and I are definitely on the same wavelength. I planted 3 more rhubarb roots this afternoon. I love canning rhubarb sauce. My husband likes it better than applesauce, but I'm still making him eat all that applesauce. Not all this year. I'm not that cruel. I have inspected my apple trees and it looks like another bumper crop year. I'm going to still put some away myself but the neighbors are going to enjoy it this year.
