I was vaguely aware of Max Martin. His success (And good for him!) shows what an outlier I am when I say, "I don't get it." I looked at his 25 #1 songs that he has written or co-written.

I don't hear any of Martin's songs approaching the quality of this group. His songs are slightly less inane than Sugar, Sugar by the Archies. He is The Monkees of the 21st Century.

I find it just seems to be a long progression of the same hypnotic loop with gradual modulation of key sounds.
But there has to be some sort of structure to it to make it dynamic too, right?

I am a Bridge man. Meaning, that's the part I write for me. The other parts I write to sound good, professional, cool, whatever but when it comes to the "C" part or "bridge" I do what it is I like. I let go on the bridge. Also, I like to put the meaty weight of a song after the bridge. It's a thank you to all who listened that far and I want people to leave the "musical meal" feeling full.

That is 68 bar, if you keep 84 bpm the song length will be 3'14.28". PI.🙌

This video is 5 years old so you probably won't see this comment but why did you say that you only have to write 3 parts for this song structure? The way I see it is: 1. Verse, 2. Pre, 3. Chorus, AND 4. Bridge. Right? Anyway, I loved the video!

Sounds boring a shit, I hate that minimalism is just seen as "the correct way of doing art" these days. I wouldn't even listen to music like that, let alone make it. Instead of just going with a default pop structure, you can for example, copy one from one of your favorite songs, still easylie done and already proven structure, but it does wonders for motivation when you actually make music you like. Same goes for the other cathegories, copy from music you like when it comes to the logistics, don't listen to pop supremacists.

um acctually my favorite song goes verse 5 -> bridge -> post-chorus -> verse 4 -> chorus -> verse 3-> verse 2 -> verse 1 -> verse 1 -> verse 2 -> verse 3 -> chorus -> verse 4 -> post-chorus -> bridge -> verse 5 so i win lol good vid

You produce interesting videos, but you should pay more attention to publishing or having videos published with subtitles, so as to allow you to deepen the contents, which in my opinion, are very interesting.

Dont do this with every song though.

There are many famous songs which have no chorus. You can be creative with your songs, you can change the structure and try something new. As long as the audience can connect to it, you are good to go. Every person has their own unique taste in music. There are many people who love weird songs. You can always experiment. Try to be different and you will always find someone who loves your song even when others don't because everyone has their own likings. So, go ahead and be playful. It's your song, do as you please. There are no rules for creativity.

I like to write from back to front. chorus 3 first then working forward to the intro. Helps me to set the dynamics in a song, eg. Chorus 3 the biggest sounding etc

So a chorus should be 5 or 6 words, but 8 bars? Then I take it that all 8 of those bars must be the same 1 bar.

Fantastic video. My problem is, I've got over 2,000 little (8--16 bar) song ideas (instrumental), which I've compiled over the last 20+ years. I used an arranger-type keyboard that has hundreds of music styles/rhythms to choose from. Each little song idea sounds great on its own when I play it on repeat, looping back into itself. But whenever I try to combine some of these ditties into a song-like structure, they rarely sound natural together. Their energy (their "busy-ness"?) is too similar or something, or the pitches are in the same range, etc. It sounds like I'm trying to paste together things that are "competing" with each other to be the main hook.

Anyway, on one level, I know there must be a perfect verse that would complement whatever current chorus idea I've got playing, but, I don't feel motivated to try to come up with it from scratch, since it might already exist among these other 2,000 clips I've got. So I have to just keep trying these different combinations out. You'd think having this many ideas would be a "great problem to have", but it's really not. So far, they seem sealed off from each other. Maybe I should try inserting a couple bars between them, with no melody - just the groove. Maybe that would let the previous part die out in the listeners' mind, and make them more receptive to something else in the next part... Just brainstorming...

As it is, they're like these beautiful little musical "orphans", looking for a home. Maybe I should just try to make them sound as polished and good as they can be - on their own - and submit them as jingles for commercials, or other media that have a need for short, catchy or haunting musical passages, rather than trying to force them together into a song. Anyway, I'd welcome any suggestions.

For me its was not very helpful.. it was more for a producer not a song writter, i dont understand bridges prechorus.. it doesnt make sense in my head i dont understand what changes.. what is the difference..

IMO i personally don’t think this is the greatest advice . because a lot of my favorite songs actually begin with the chorus… it’s not the greatest advice… even max martin himself said there’s no set formula to songwriting and he’s written the most hits in the last 30yrs. so personally i wouldn’t take all of this advise. but rather max martins since he’s been writing the hits

The majority of metal, punk, hardcore, indie, bluegrass, hip-hop, and even EDM follows this format. Classical music, jazz, trad folk, and prog tends to deviate. I'd love to see lessons on how to shake up this structure. I've been defaulting to it for decades, and struggle to write songs with more complex structures and fewer repeating elements.

Hey just want to say thank you sooo much for this vid, it has helped me with many of my songs. It is very good. 🙂 As you said at the start, it can be "overwhelming" so I often come back to this vid to calm me down and to get started.
