I was in Varanasi last week, meet 2 intersting people.

1. Sweden baba - a Swedish national who is a full on sadhu, living there, riding a motorcycle. Was warned by my hotel staff , where he lives not to talk to him, as he likes to go on and on.

1. A spanish gentleman, who has been coming here for 3 decades.

I was in Varanasi after the Maha Khumb Mela ,two weeks ago and yes the new Ghat you showed is off the beaten path but the other place you showed is central ghat area near dashinwade ghat ,Munshi ghat ect , alot of people and tourist ,especially during Maha Khumb. The reason i think so much people is you were there around same time as me, during Maha Khumb Mela. Actually i'm back for more comment .Yes the places you showed didn't have alot of tourists so you probably are correct .Sorry

Kashi was the name of the ancient kingdom existing since Iron age. It was one of the 12 Mahajanpads (republics) at one point. Varanasi was the capital. Now Kashi and Varanasi have become synonymous. But Kashi was not just Varanasi.

The tiny opening in the main doorway was a way to deter strangers from looking in or coming in with ease. It was the 1st layer of 'security' to the house.

They are not hidden. They are just too old, and all other structures were built around them later on as population skyrocketed.

Did it occur to you while looking down at the sanctum two floors below that it could be ground level at the time the temple was first built. Further construction above happening as the mount of dumping forcing the city to expand vertically.

Respected Chris, I suggest you to kindly visit Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. That is called the holy land of Shivavatari (Lord Shiva's incarnate) Guru Gorakshnath(12th century A.D.). There is a famous monastery of Guru and there you may also know a very unique meditation type called 'Hathyoga' of that Nath sect. Very few ascetic practice that meditation.
I know If you visit there, you'll perfectly discribe about that 'Hathyoga' and I'm eager to know all that in your viewpoint.
And yes, from there Kushinagar (Lord Buddha's Nirvana place) is also not so far(only about 50 kms).
