I don't know, after rewatching the show as many times as I did I don't think Phoebe is as good a person as she portrays herself to be. Sure, she could be outwardly kind in easy ways (the hardest way probably being the surrogate thing, but we do know that was driven by real-world circumstances) like offering the occasional pep talk or volunteering some time to charity, but of all the friends she was the one who could be the most mean-spirited.

Comes to mind the way she often bullied and demeaned Chandler, or how she routinely blurted out secrets that caused infighting between Monica and Chandler (and then always acted like she just couldn't help herself from spilling shit out). That's not responsible behavior, good friend behavior, or even behavior from someone who's supposed to be the most street-wise in the group – this is the same person who claimed she had in the past held her own under literal torture (which of course for all we know might be one of her random lies). I get that Phoebe comes from trauma and that Ursula is the perfect barometer by how she might have turned out if she had given in to bitterness (and the subtext is maybe that it was the friend group that changed that course?), but when it comes to actually caring about others in a way that takes effort I really don't see how Phoebe is that much different.

Phoebe is my favorite. The rest WERE high school.

She was always my favorite Friend. Why the writers didn't pair Phoebe up with Joey when the other four became couples within the group is an insane oversight. It could have been the best thing to happen to the show. They were made for each other.

One of the keys to why FRIENDS was so successful was because it related to the cliche story of white upper middle class suburban people moving to The City to find themselves. This is represented most by Rachel but also by Chandler, Monica and Ross. Joey and Phoebe represent "native New Yorkers". The legendary colorful, tough non conservative characters that vouch for and guide our WASP tourists in this hip new exciting liberal world of New York City. Today, the Joey and Phoebe characters would be LGBTQ+ people of color. Not unlike the "Magical Negro" trope.

Lisa Kudrow is definitely the spice in F.R.I.E.N.D.S she plays Phoebe so well ❤ her

I cannot imagine friends without Pheobe her quirkiness gives life to this show somewhat I can relate to this character😍

I really wished her brother, sister-in-law, their kids, her bio mom and her dad were there for her wedding.
Phoebe's journey was leading up to having that stability and full family she always wanted. She spent her early years alone, abandoned, and her slowly building and gathering up the family around her should have been capped with then all being there to see her welcome her husband and join their family together too.
Her sister Ursula obviously wouldnt be at the wedding, but Ursula is kind of a warning tale of IF Phoebe had stayed the same, IF she didnt welcome people in, and gone looking for family. Ursula doesnt seem to have any faith in family, but Phoebe sought to see the good in people.

As a young teen who watched Friends for the first time, I liked Rachel most coz she is cute. However, having grown up and learned a bit more about humanity and life, I came to appreciate Phoebe the most.

I think Monica is like the surrogate mother who keeps her adult children fed and alive, whereas Phoebe is the Fairy Godmother who teaches the adult children truly important values in life.

If Phoebe Buffay truly is the mystery ingredient of "Friends" then I think it's safe to say that Luna Lovegood could very well be the mystery ingredient of the "Harry Potter" series. They're both blonde and unconventional, artistic, non-conformist type people who walk to the beat of their own drum (and a very cool one at that) in a world where most others see it as the weirdest drum around without taking another look at it to appreciate how cool it is and how it actually adds something beautiful to the world. Both are incredibly deep characters who come from humble beginnings and have suffered the loss of a mother and share the same wonderful wackiness in nature with their fathers. Both Phoebe and Luna have huge hearts and offer valuable insight and impart great wisdom in a very unusual, creative and spontaneous manner that is particularly unique to them so it's pretty clear that, if there were to be a "Friends/Harry Potter" crossover of characters perhaps the most epic of them all were to be if Phoebe Buffay and Luna Lovegood met each other.

I just want to have a best friend like Phoebe Buffay. 🫠😍🙂. My favorite character. Phoebe Buffay.

Thank you for this video. I have always loved Phoebe’s character & this outlines the exact reason why. I wish they did not use Phoebe’s backstory as a joke but it should have been explored deeper.❤ I also feel that my personality is a good mixture of both Monica & Phoebe.

Sh’s so irrelevant in Friends. You could pull her from the entire show and it would not change the tone of it one bit. Phoebe is just there. I honestly don’t even remember any of her scenes. Not one scene with her was funny for me. Even if she didn’t exist at all, Friends would be totally imaginable.

Phoebe represents all the blacks, gays, latinos and other minorities that the creators ignored in 1994.

Do not forget the points where her open-mindedness is completely gone away and contradicts herself when she breaks-off with her dates and defines masculinity throughout the seasons. She doesn't care if her teasing is crossing the boundaries of personal insult. All the characters have flaws but Phoebe is one of the characters that showcases toxicity disguised as humour.

She’s always been my favorite character. And even I never noticed how much of the “puppet master” she was on the show and the other characters’ major plot points and decisions.

She is an interesting character but I dont like that she was so many times mean, bitchy and not nice to her friends. One of the worst moment was when she revealed to Chandler, that Monica came to their room in London looking for Joey. This could actually ruin the relationship of Monica and Chandler forever, but she doesn't even apologize. Or when she says to the Ursula's fiance that she is not that good as he thinks. It was clearly his choice to believe to all the nonsense that Ursula told him, and I guess they still could be happy together. I think that this was very mean. Or when she screamed "my eyes, my eyes", why did she do it? Monica and Chandler were not that lucky in their relationship before their relationship, so I guess there were some kind of jealousy going on. Plus, she was constantly mean to Chandler. Or when she and Rachel actually went after Chandler and the real estate agent. They came to altogether to tell this to Monica. Again, this could ruin her marriage forever, and their actions clearly affect the dynamics of the group. So I still dont know how I feel about Phoebe, she has some nice side, but also a nasty one.

I have heard that some "friends fan" saying that Phoebe wasn't a good friend. Honestly if you are a real friends fan you have to love all of them with their downsides and their advantages

Phoebe is favourite character of my elegant Prussian grandma. I think it's very telling of her personality that disciplined, successful woman is also an accepting and fun-loving person.
