Q Rankings: Worst to Best

Of course we all agree! (But having said that, the notion of an octogenarian, or even a septuagenarian, being the most up-to-date gadgets guy MI6 had to offer, was pretty ridiculous. You had to suspend your disbelief—hard. I did, because I loved the guy.)

I personally think John Cleese was a perfect successor to Desmond Llewellyn as Q. In his first appearance, he's clumsy, but in his second appearance, he's competent and can play off of 007 perfectly! Honestly, I think he's the second best of the Q actors.

Desmond is the best. God be with you Desmond RIP

I think Ben would make a great James Bond.

Hes great of what they set out to do with the new interpretation, but bad as the traditionall Q character

I'd put Ben Whishaw in last place, he was pretty bad.

I do prefer Cleese over Whishaw. Whishaw is far too young to be a Major. The only argument against Cleese is that he was too similar to Llewelyn. I prefer the gadgety Q over programmer wizkid.

Also, choosing a younger one feels like it's challenging the longevity, as he's not gonna be Q until he dies, which I more or less think should be a requirement.

Alec McCowan, a fine stage actor, was a refreshing change from the tiresome, sarcastic, back-and-forth with Bond. His exchange with Sean Connery (who chose him) was brilliantly written, as was the rest of the excellent “Never Say Never Again.”

“Licence To Kill” is one of my favourites, and It was wonderful to see Desmond Llewelyn play a more active part. But his exit from the series was thoroughly unamusing, dragged down even more by John Cleese (of all people)!

Ben Whishaw made a wonderful debut in “Skyfall.” The museum meeting was inspired, and the best line was, “You were expecting an exploding pen? We don’t go in for that sort of thing anymore.”

Desmond is my favorite Q. He was just so perfect and what the scenes with him and Roger Moore great is they were good friends and the ribbing was much good natured.

I watched purely to see if you would’ve been crazy enough to put anyone else at number 1. I’m glad to see you still have a firm grip on reality.

My problem with the latest Q is that he is a little too reminiscent of Richard Ayoade (either as Moss or himself). Why not just cast Ayoade?

Desmond Llewelyn is indeed the literal definition of Q, but I think Cleese was a very ideal replacement.

Cleese is a great actor and had the comic skills to make Q branch scenes work, but sadly he wasn’t given much time to ease into the role or to let fans ease up to him.

Llewelyn takes the cake obviously, but Cleese did a great job and I wish we got to spend more films with him.

Not been a big fan of Wishaw; the character is a hard to swallow diversion from the Q norm. Plus I keep trying to quote Paddington whenever he's on screen.

I do NOT like Ben Whishaw’s take on “Q.” Too dark and foreboding. Humorless.

For me Ben Whishaw on par with Desmond Llewelyn, but I don't mind the ranking because Desmond Llewelyn was so influential in the role.

With the various Qs, I saw John as... rather adequate. Everyone likes to forget that the BEST Q (aka Desmond) left some damn impressive sized shoes to fill, and if he was able to have more movies and games under his belt, he would probably be a pretty decent Q in his own right.

Sadly he had to replace the best Q in the franchise.

It's like how everyone convientently forgets that Kora was in the situation where it had to fill the shoes for Avatar (and by god did Avatar leave some damn impressive shoes to fill).

Ben Whishaw sucks as Q. Daniel Craig’s bonds have literally no gadgets. R should have stayed the Q for the rest of the films.

I wonder if we will be oversaturated with Ben Whishaw as Q in the future....

Something tells me after the end of No Time to Die...these roles will be recast.

I can't help but to think that Calvin thought of editing some effect of him going down the lift at the end of the video but it didn't go out well so he cut off before it 😂

Desmond Llewellyn was the best Q. He will always be my number 1. I loved him in this role. 2nd John Cleese. 3rd Ben Whishaw.

I mostly agree apart from John Cleese’s portrayal which I never enjoyed 😅

I anticipate exactly zero surprises in this lists ranking.
And after watching I am not at all surprised.

I'd love for the next Q to be on the younger actor, but a slightly more irritable one, one who won't take any of Bond's crap and will happily tell him how much money all the cars, computers and guns cost. I'd love to see one struggling with management, basically.

There's no such thing as a worst Q, only thing worst is not enough "Pay Attention, 007..."

Ben Whishaw as Q gets some sharp and witty quips, but Desmond Llewellyn was just a such a... lovable and fun teddy bear of a man.

If you read Desmond's wiki, he had an extraordinary life indeed.

They should have called Wilshaw's Q "Otacon"

I hope Ben continues to play Q long after the Craig era.

Cleese was the most jarring of them. It didn't suit the world of bond.
