Just got back from a week in Venice and the islands. It's amazing, but not quite in the way this video portrays it. It has zillions of tourists, mostly following guidebooks like this video, and glued to Google Maps, or a similar smartphone app. If you can read a map of Venice (not easy!), stay 20 meters off the tourist paths and you'll see a different Venice of small stores and small canals. Gondolas are for tourists, except as ferries across the Grand Canal. Normal public transport is by motorized vaporettos, for which 75 min.,day, and 3-day passes are available, I strongly advise studying the vaporetto routes before you go to Venice. They're not totally obvious and staff, though helpful, are limited. The center of tourist h-ll is the Piazza San Marco, with the Basilica, Campanile and Palazzo Ducale. Interestingly, tourist makeup changes from very varied during the week to predominantly Italian, and much more numerous, at weekends, as working Italians take their families for a mini-vacation. Forget the Rialto bridge. A photo shot is enough. It's been ruined by a modern tourist arcade running down its center.

If the press of tourism is all too much, take the vaporetto to Giudecca. It's much quieter, but has a few restaurants (much cheaper!) and interesting churches, plus views back to the main island of Venice. If you go to Murano, go to one of the smaller glass blowing shops. You'll see more and avoid the crowds. Torcello is the oldest inhabited island with a Byzantine/Romanesque church. Most tourists don't stop there, but continue on to Burano, which is cute but very crowded for the return passage.

FYI, 99% of transportation is by motorboat, sewage disposal is uncertain, and I suspect that the canal water is very polluted. At any rate, it's an opaque green color until you get very close to the sea.

Hope this helps.
