I love the new attention you have been giving to the music and theatrical aspect of your videos. Great work.
ОтветитьMaybe if you left both ends of the tent open it would not trap condensation ?
ОтветитьI believe the time in the place for miler is when Rescue comes in thank you then they give you one of those to wrap up in to warm you up or if you had one when you get really really cold, then maybe wrap up in it but then unwrap Once you get to that really cold point, then use it that should warm you up enough that you can get on the road and get to walking again but then you might have to wrap up in it again to get warmed up against you can go further, or like I said, when Rescue gets to you they should have some of those to wrap around you to warm you up from hypothermia. I don't see how it would be good to use it all night with the condensation and all.
ОтветитьYou should not put mylar next to you, you should have something between you and the mylar
ОтветитьThank you for your honesty and making the review realistic.
Perhaps try the SOL Escape Pro bivi which is waterproof and 'somewhat' breathable.
Also, please could you review the Blizzard medical/survival gear. They do a triple layer insulation - but sadly not breathable.
I have used it with chemical hand warmers. I have several packs packed inside my kit.
Also i have a couple of Zippo 9S PLUS electric hand warmers - amazing game changers
These scenarios are awesome and the commitment to realism is greatly appreciated. However (ya just knew there had to be a “but” or “however” coming ) in almost every lost hiker, or skier/snowboarder who went down the backside survival story the first thing the victim does when cold starts becoming an issue is attempt to light a fire. Heck, Luke. Living in the PNW I refuse to journey to Walmart without a Bic in my pocket and usually a ferro on my keys or somehow ensconced in EDC. Maybe it’s a good idea to downshift these tests of survival gear and start including a fire? You could continue realism by making the fires in an amateurish way. Use green wood. Face them the wrong way. Run out of wood at 2am. Feign a burned/wrapped hand. You know, all the classic noob mistakes. (Lord knows I’ve made em. ) The radiance of fire, the smoke, the ash in the air; it changes everything. Anyhow great video 👍🏼
Ответитьok, we understand that it causes a lot of condensation, but why did it do it??? , if you closed the other end the air wasn't circulating, it's normal! I would have liked to see the classic configuration as suggested by the manufacturing companies, i.e. in an A-frame open on both sides, and obviously the structure placed perpendicular to the predominant winds, so the ridge-line passed inside and supported the ridge, as well as you did it's a bit misleading! do not you think??
ОтветитьI mean no offense, so please dont take this wrong. But i wish your videos were much shorter. The whole walking wnd talking for twenty minutes is unnecessary. Getting to the point would be better IMHO.
ОтветитьIf you were stranded in your car in the winter and clothed reasonably, a space blanket could make a difference. As a primary shelter in mn winter temps, only better than nothing. For the cost, a trial in your driveway would tell all.
ОтветитьIf its pitched to the ground at the back did you change pitch to have height at the back?
ОтветитьVery nice video.
ОтветитьWould you consider a test of the Vango 400 storm shelter?
ОтветитьWould love to see more, especially with the SOL products, that are supposed to be thr cream of the crop.
ОтветитьPretty much every thing you said I was thinking when I seen these advertised. Though I'm not an overly skilled with some camping ideals but, I have made some very comfy camping nights with debris in the forest.
Things like this are actually dangerous. Marketing gives the capital idea you'll be warm and safe. But, your not.
I have better experiences with a 10' X10' light weight tarp that has tie off's. That is a better consideration and you can practice set ups in your back yard and if no back yard then a park will do for practice only.
Why not just bring a headlamp and be able to hike back to your car in the dark ?
ОтветитьWhat do you think of a mylar poncho in a survival situation instead of tent, sitting criss-cross on a stump or log for ground insulation and trying to take short naps while leaning over you knees?
Reason for poncho is that it’s pocket carry size and doubles as emergency rain protection on regular hikes.
Thanks for making this video. Very informative!
Probably better at keeping you cool than warm. So far, I have only used mylar products to reflect sunlight and keep spaces cool. Some are opaque and useful for hanging on a sunny window to reflect sun. It can keep a room cool on those very hot days. I can drape a mylar blanket over a hammock and reflect sun out yet capture a breeze. Drape them over coolers. If configured in the right way, it will shade the ground and keep it radiating its cool geothermal properties for a place to chill, or even a cool resting spot for a dog.
ОтветитьGreat video as always from my experience you get Mylar and then there is Mylar I’ve varying degrees of Mylar some are much better than others
ОтветитьS o l brand along with that type BIVY .. SOL sells a emergency ESCAPE BIVY .. WHICH REFLECT HEAT BUT ACTUALLY BREATHES!!.. IT'S FOLDED UP FORM IS MUCH LARGER THAN THAT LITTLE BIVY .. BUT YOU WON'T GET THE CONDENSATION LIKE YOU GOT WITH THAT PLAIN MYLAR BIVY ... ALSO IT'S PROBABLY BETTER OFF TO JUST BUY A SOL EMERGENCY MYLAR BLANKET..ALSO .. CARRY A INDUSTRIAL LARGE TRASH BAG WHICH TAKES UP VERY LITTLE ROOM.. YOU CAN FILL IT FULL OF LEAVES AND MAKE A Bros bed .. to keep your body off the ground.. I think I'd rather go with a plane lightweight tarp.. and set it up in a pup tent configuration..
ОтветитьYou Are A Wnderful Teacher. Luke I Have Heard How Much I Need Emergency Shelter And Bag Thank You For Caring And Sharing Your Experience With Products. I WILL DEFF..STAY AWAY FROM MYLAR
ОтветитьSeems like practically the only purpose is to keep rain and wind off. The heat "reflection" effect always struck me as rubbish in the context of preserving human body heat. Most of heat loss is through conduction and convection, not radiation. And radiation is caught by the other tried and true layering methods anyway, contributing to creating warm air pockets around you.
ОтветитьSometimes you do great gear reviews, and sometimes OK, but sometimes you are nothing more than a blowhard. This one was a travesty. Your preconceived notions tainted your review. The tent is designed to have both ends open. It is nothing more than protection from the elements. Keeping both ends open allows it to breathe, thus reducing condensation. You pointed out that mylar is waterproof, thus non-breathable. Therefore, if you are in a bag, you are going to get wet. There are ways to reduce this, but you chose not to discuss them. I have used mylar blankets as a tarp, and slept in a SOL Escape Bivy in the desert and mountains and was comfortable. Waiting until after dark to determine you’re not going to make it back to the car was a bad mistake. If you used common sense, you would have made that determination earlier. Then you could have made a better bivouac camp. At a minimum, you could have made a small fire, not the bonfires you usually make, to provide some heat. Mistake number one had to be you took survival equipment to the field without ever testing it in your home. You usually have better reviews, but this one was a total waste of oxygen.
ОтветитьExcellent content. Great video with really important information. Thanks for enduring the suck factor for everybody to learn from. My thoughts is since its so cheap and small "until used" its a great option to throw in a cargo pocket or pack if u are out hunting or fishing or hiking and u say get lost or "turned around" lol... it would atleast provide u with a somewhat feeling of safety or comfort to be able to crawl inside something out of the elements to feel protected for the night. I would have sure thrown one in my pocket in my younger days back in the 80s 90s when i hunted and fished alot in Mississippi i never heard of anything like this lol thanks again for sharing the things to watch out for with the condensation factors and all.👍
ОтветитьDon’t forget the G-Lock.
Ответитьwhat if a snake came in the door -_-
Ответитьyou mentioned how mylar is good for preventing hypothermia not reversing it. if someone has hypothermia, they have at least some body heat, so why couldn't a mylar blanket be used to reflect what little heat is there and over time the body's heat will build back up? or does this process take too long that it's not effective? good points, great video, thanks!
ОтветитьMilo doesn’t breathe, so what about moisture buildup on the inside?
ОтветитьGreat video, but would the condensation been much less if you didn't seal the other end of the shelter and only limited it with a plow point configuration with a ridgeline tie out to a low pin? Just wondering.
ОтветитьHi I’m Gary from Liverpool e lane glad of this episode I’ll not be getting any of them survival tents not worth the trouble I enjoy your. Ideas thanks
ОтветитьThank you. I almost bought this crap.
ОтветитьIt's just a tube tent made of lighter material. The same idea as the tents we used in the sixties and seventies in boy scouts. To do it right you need a ridge line and then at least six clothes pins or paper clamps to bring the ends of the burrito up and leave the top open at the ridge Line for ventilation at both ends. I would like to see more on these emergency types of gear. Thanks for the great work.
ОтветитьWonder if a tea light would work.
Ответить
ОтветитьHe is honest and performs real life tests on all types of gear even if it does mean he has a bad night
ОтветитьThank you
ОтветитьThx for all the videos I´ve already watched and for the extra bird call info.. ! RE: moisture and cold in the mylar blanket, do you think a light wool base layer might keep you warm despite the buildup of moisture.. ? That might enable you to have a half decent kip if you have a hard day behind/ahead of you.. ?
ОтветитьThanks for testing out these garbage bags so we don't have to
ОтветитьHave you ever been in place that makes you uncomfortable or uneasy every time you go there? Or a place that you avoid because of those reasons?
ОтветитьWhat if you open/cut up the bottom end of the bivy OR cut the thing open completely and use as a top blanket?
ОтветитьLiterally every time you yawned, I yawned.
ОтветитьA very good information video. Taught me a lot. Keep up the great content and say hello to Mrs wolf John from Sheffield in England Great Britain
ОтветитьExcellent video
Than what to use in emergency
I have four of the life tent ones. Wich is similar as what you're using now. The paracord is to hold the top up which I also fine it useless cause both ends are open. They are good for heat blankets for winter season to stay warm. I enjoy all the videos and Ideas you share with us viewers. Thank you, Luke,.
ОтветитьI use a similar tent / bivy combo as part of my Search and Rescue pack sleep system. I also have a tarp, inflatable ground pad, and an inflatable pillow. I've used the bivy overnight and was very warm and dry down to about 40 degrees F. Once it got down to 34 degrees F, I got a little cold, but I still remained dry. No condensation. The trick is to have a little wind to dry it up. Opening up both sides of that tent would help with the condensation. Yes, you would be a little colder, but you'd be dry. I like how you split open the bivy to make it more like a quilt. That's a great option if you have ground coverage.
ОтветитьWe plan to add a double or triple shelled (ie, partially insulating) mylar bag to our fishing kit. I'm right in thinking that if a person falls into cold water, immediately removes their cold wet clothes and climbs into such a bag until dry clothes can be found or created.......that it will be beneficial?
ОтветитьIt sounds like it did it’s specified job. Survival is not comfortable. It’s ultralight to get the right-minded through. I appreciate your work.
ОтветитьCondense. Condensate is a noun. Sorry.
ОтветитьI remember being stuck once camping in Scotland and I just wrapped the bivvy bag around my chest over my jacket. Toasty.
Ответитьlot heat off your head......wool stocking hat in
