Yeah, it's really sad to see this side of Canada, because many of my aunts live in there, and they still have to work in malls or shops in order to run their daily lives. Although my cousin has a successful government job but still one of my aunt never got any permanent citizenship or Canadian Passport.

I was raised in Vancouver and our family moved to the US when I was 32 for 22 years. In 2021, after our kids graduated high school, we made the decision to move back to Canada for several reasons, top of the list was universal healthcare. We live a good life in Victoria and don't regret our decision. Canada just feels safer and we have had wonderful experiences with our medical care. No matter what Western G7 nation you live in, prices are high, housing costs are high, it's the unfortunate outcome of neoliberalism and the wealth gap.

Canada needs stricter immigration, which should be limited to those coming to Canada to be a highly-skilled dentist, surgeon, doctor, or any other profession which would not require re-schooling for those fields once arrived in Canada.

Canada has always been expensive. I moved here from Texas for my wife. This isn't the same Canada I moved to though. It's far worse. The job market is crap. It's difficult to get a job in your field. It's easy to get useless jobs that have no long term career opportunities. Real estate is atrocious. Ninety year mortgages? That's just crazy. I don't foresee owning a home in Canada. Rent has gotten so high we refuse to move. We need a bigger place, but we can't afford it. The healthcare is not good, and the wait times are ridiculous. I got better healthcare when I paid out of pocket, but under provincial insurance it's pretty bad. It also doesn't have full healthcare like the UK. At least paying for insurance in the States, everything was covered. Wages suck, benefits are generally bad or nonexistent. My wife is finally about ready to get the hell out.

Insightful but fails to fully deliberate the mild sociopath controlling " the dark side of Canada". It is vaudevillean but reached the boiling point several years ago when the Liberals fell to 32% but gained two more seats. This is due to the 37K votes required on avg for one seat with the Cons needing 50K+ to gain one seat in House. That alone cant be blamed on Jimmy Singh although much else can be including a vast inclusion of Indian immigrants who then decide the white north is almost literally true.

Its now impossible for a low to moderate income person to buy anything. The price of everything just keeps going up up up. Rent in this small town was 400/500 a month in 2015, that same place today runs 2 thousand, and for the first time ever I see, people living on the streets. The reason so many on the streets? Minimum wage 17.45 an hour, rent 2 thousand, do the math, do you want shelter or do you want to eat? We have the government thinking that the average wage is 70 thousand a year. How do they come up with that number, if you add the billionaires and millionaires to the equation the average worker looks to be better off. I would not recommend anyone to come to Canada.

Australia, same thing ,the average house out of reach unless you earn big$$$, population boost with lack of infrastructure and homes, rent sky-rocketing, even rentals are hard to get 1%vacancy in big cities. Feel sorry for the young people. Governments sold all the tax payers utilities that employed many people and keep the costs of essentials down. Many politicians sitting on big company boards after they retire. The same companies the government made rich. Going downhill, sad . Desperate times ,Desperate measures that's the road we are heading down.

Who can afford to own a house and have children these days? It's just not an attractive option anymore. Instead we've chosen to import people so our elderly and well-off can continue to live in the style to which they've become accustomed. That's basically it.

If it were my call I'd have tried to go the same route as Japan, as I think culture is important. And feeling like a "people" is important. If I visit Japan I kind of hope the people are Japanese. If I go to France I want to experience French culture.

We chose the bottom line over trying to hold on to who we were.

Herman D. Potzner PhD from Harvard has written a book called Burn, discussing Food Economy and Climate. He says that the US consumes 25 quadrillion kilocalories every year at a population of 330 million. To do this the annual expenditure is 77 million kilocalories per person. That's 210,000 kcal per day to give one american their daily calories. Globally we use 141 quadrillion kcal each year, on average of 47,000 kcal per person per day. This is 16x more energy needed than our metabolic engines require. There are 7.7 billion people on earth, but we are burning energy like there are 120 billion of us. He says it is completely unsustainable. I've added this because it seems food prices have not hindered people from buying, nor going out to restaurants, nor ordering take out and having it delivered. Why are food prices going up? Because they can. As for housing, single tenanted homes are probably a thing of the past and most of us may have to consider renting together or buying together as much as other parts of the world have been doing for generations.

No wonder, these days there seem to be an increasingly number of Canadian expatriates working in Malaysia, especially in Petaling Jaya & Kuala Lumpur. Perhaps, they choose to come here because cost of living & life in Malaysia in general is still relatively cheaper than, say, Singapore etc. Additionally, the English language is widely spoken in Malaysia. And local folks here have a reputation for being more courteous & friendlier than elsewhere in Asia!

Here in New Zealand, I've met quite a few British and Americans living here as well (my partner is American) but recently, I've also started seeing more Canadians coming here.

Typically with British people living here, they say they move to New Zealand because of better pay, better ability to or chances of buying a house (housing here in NZ is already very expensive as is but okay), warmer weather and NZ being less crowded.

A few Americans living here did say they've moved here because they married a Kiwi or they work in the film industry, but most of them say because of New Zealand's free universal healthcare, the fact we have maternity leave and better workers rights than the States.

I never really expected Canada to have the same social issues as that of the USA or UK.

Lemme lay it pretty bare as a Canadian myself… approximately 1/8 individuals (or on family scale roughly 1/5) suffers from food insecurity. That number can double when ya go farther north or into Indigenous communities thanks to food deserts…. A rich nation where more than 10% of people have to worry about something as basic as dinner day to day… if that isn’t a warning sign of a sinking ship I have no idea what is…
Oh and our housing issue is totally a cost/accessibility issue and not a shortage. There is about 3 empty residential homes/apartments per every single unhoused person living rough outside…and if we account for shelter homeless (ie those couch surfing or otherwise under a roof without a fixed residence) the rate of unhoused triples…

As a Canadian, stay the hell away at this point in history, you would be shocked at the cost to live here. There is a massive housing shortage right now, so of course, the rent, and real estate is completely unrealistic now. The cost of literally everything is driving through the roof right now. If you are thinking of coming here, I would wait a few years till we get this mess sorted out.

Your insights into the challenges facing my Canada are thought-provoking. Like any country, Canada is changingy, and addressing the very diverse concerns of its citizens future is a must. We find ourselves on a demographic cliff, a challenge documented since the baby boom in the '50s, with the repercussions felt today. The lack of prior planning is evident, and knee-jerk reactions from the government raise significant concerns for both those born here and those immigrating.

As a Canadian born and raised, I also worry about the future of my own children. The pace at which our builders are asked to construct is unrealistic. In 2023, builders were told to build 4.25 times faster than before, an impossible feat. While there may be available land for development, the shortage of builders makes the goal unattainable. In my local area, builders are working tirelessly, but the demand outpaces the supply. In Canada, for every 14 retiring construction workers there is only one to replace them.

In 2022, Canada welcomed 437,000 new permanent residents, over 604,000 temporary workers, 500,000 foreign students, and nearly 100,000 refugees, all of which significantly impact housing. More of the same in 2023, and I am sure more in 2024. Canada wants to grow its population to 100M people by 2100. We are only at 40M. Navigating the demographic cliff is an ongoing challenge, and more growing pains are expected.

It's important to acknowledge that perspectives vary based on one's region, economic status, and social context. If you reside in a rapidly growing area, your perspective might differ from those in other regions. The Canada of the past is transforming into a more multicultural future, which will help us all define our new path—whether it be in politics, economies, social issues, or regional dynamics. Your quoted figures lack context, and it's essential to consider the polls and news sources shaping your perspective on Canadians feeling Canada is 'broken.' As a Canadian, I certainly know it is changing.
