The internet makes people convinced that this type of thing can only be sexual, but I don't think it's the case.

I also believe everybody has the right to live in a way that's most authentic to them as long as they're not harming anyone, and I don't think they are harming anyone.

Individuals who identify as a species other than the one they were biologically born into are called therians. I have some theories about why some individuals identify as therians.

It's possible for genetically encoded traits lost to evolution millions of years ago to re-emerge, because the genes are dormant in the gene pool and there's always a small chance of them recombining. This is called atavism. Innate instincts are genetically encoded traits, and some relate to one's own physical body. If somebody is born with atavism where they inherit the instincts of a distant ancestral species, that can cause species dysphoria. Some of the ancestors of humans from tens of millions of years ago had more in common with modern dogs and cats than they did with modern humans. This can cause an individual to feel a strong connection to the modern species they feel innately most like, and they could end up taking on the other traits of that species that aren't necessarily inherently part of their own instincts, just to feel like they fit in with a species and aren't completely alone in their species identity. The way some of those species live as pets in modern times can make some therians crave that lifestyle.

Most modern humans don't get to live up to our natural instincts anyway. Up until 10,000 years ago, we were wild animals, and our instincts haven't changed. Surpressing your natural instincts is unhealthy, and not everybody finds it so easy to do. It's understandable that some individuals are so uncomfortable with the modern way of life that they require some form of escapism for their own mental wellbeing. Sure these therians live as domestic animals, but domestic animals don't have to put up with as much of the stress of modern life, and they can still follow most of their instincts without judgement. There are also therians who identify as wild animals and want to be part of an ecosystem.

Hightened empathy for other species, a deep appreciation for them and a strong perception of how much all animals have in common with each other, including humans, seeing through the notions of human exceptionalism that place an imaginary gulf between humans and all other animals, can make some individuals feel much closer to some other species of animals than most humans do. Human exceptionalism makes humans feel even more disconnected from nature and is disrespectful to other species, and to many biological humans who reject the philosophy of human exceptionalism, behaving like another species can be a good way to go against it, feel a deeper connection to other species and embrace the fact that humans are animals too, and we all have so much in common.

Some cases of therianthropy may also be masking underlying feelings of incongruence. There is more than one reason some people aren't comfortable in the body they've inherited, but by acting like literally anything other than what their biological body seems to define them as can be good enough, even if they haven't really got to the bottom of who they are innately.

There are lots of other possible reasons. The reasons don't matter though. What matters is that these people are happy, so please don't judge them... And please can someone give me some head scratches? And where is my tail? I'm definitely a human but we were supposed to be wild animals. I want to reconnect with nature and be part of an ecosystem again, so I don't have to harm the environment and I can live happily. I don't think I have an atavistic tail instinct, but tails are cute and I want more ways to talk to my favourite animals, who use their tails for communicating. Oi, stop judging me.
