Likely the narrator was wrong when he said "We don't think he even got to suckle from her" Because the first milk after birth is called colostrum which contains antibodies to protect the newborn against disease and infection, and immune and growth factors and other bioactives that help to activate a newborn's immune system, jumpstart gut function, and seed a healthy gut microbiome in the first few days of life. The bioactives found in colostrum are essential for a newborn's health, growth and vitality.[1] Colostrum strengthens a baby's immune system and is filled with white blood cells to protect it from infection. Calves without Colostrum will not do well initially nor later in life as their immune system is compromised.

The donkey if it is still alive had received some colostrum from the mother or it would have died shortly after birth ..with in days. I’m happy the baby is alive and cared for. Without that it has a leader chance of survival. I lived the experience.
