I just looked into my neighbourhood characters folder and I already have almost 1000 sims generated, geez (I don't use any overpopulation mods)

So what does the "no unlink on delete" mod actually do xd
is it really improving the game's health, or is it just unnecesary?

I recently found out my childhood neighbourhood that was played with by all of my family had over 1600 character files. I was questioning why there were so many, I remember my mom accidentally moved a house with a sim and then quickly moved her back into the same neighbourhood, now that ik how that process works it makes so much sense.

I loved sims 2, it was my favorite game for many years.

I also enjoyed sims 3.
But I haven't really gotten into sims 4

This video will be helpful in my future, as I've always wanted to dive into nostalgia

can you inspect what's going on with audio errors associated with Sfx3.package? i'm not a programmer, but it seems appearant to me that a whole-ass package is missing from the game or it is coded to use a resource that never existed in the first place- and is there way to make the game stop looking for it to use.

Thank you for making this video! I’ve been playing the game since it released as well! I’ve been very lucky and have never had a corrupt town and if I did I made sure to make back ups! :) happy simming

Great video. Probably the most fascinating part of this story is this myth itself. It's easy to forget as a programmer just how mysterious and almost mystical computers are to most people.

It's insane so many people thought the Sims 2 was the most unstable game in the whole franchise, considering all the failsafe the programmers coded. Sims 3 couldn't run more than a few expansion packs at once, and Sims 4 still has countless micro bugs in normal gameplay that constantly get fixed and broken (presumably because it was never meant to be the game it is today, it was supposed to be always online). Sims 2 looks like if you don't do anything stupid your save will play for years

You are a godsent- what a great video for one of the most feared things in the Sims games ever. I never played Sims 2 as a kid but I know I would have nightmares about corruption if I did lol. Beautifully paced 2 hours of video that felt much shorter and I enjoyed it a lot <3 Thank you

Playing sims 2 while listening to this. Can't believe all this wrong info got spread like wildfire. Granted, 99 percent of us are not coders so lol
I used to play the sims when i was young and i never experienced corruption. One time i had an adult sim of mine "become a child" on a public lot and you could swing him around and stuff. It was weird and i laughed and then moved on. I havent finished the video so im not sure if that means corruption or not.

I haven't played Sims 2 in years but I was absolutely obsessed with it as a child and I do remember a lot of this talk from my days downloading 9 million mods and CC and all the technical struggles around it so this was a really fascinating deep dive, and you made a lot of the technical stuff that I usually struggle to keep up with really interesting and fun to listen to in its own right.

I absolutely LOVE how you actually understand the technology and methods used in game software! I really enjoy listening to someone talk in depth about things like this, and it's really cool you have an extra level of understanding. If I were to do my life over again, I would probably get into coding of some sort. It seems like such fun!

Awesome vid, watched it fully.
I started sims 2 many years ago with the base game. Gradually added EPs, added CC.
At some point found out about sim corruption (I think I saw squiggly lines with Lilith Pleasant).
Read all the guides, did all the steps, cleaned neighborhoods myself with hoodchecker + sims PE.
End result: no squiggly lines, no game problems, no errors, nothing.
Sims 2 is more stable than the guides told us.
Better safe than sorry though.

curious if you can talk about another subject, a much smaller one, that also looks to be clouded in misconceptions and has no real explanation to it. its about that choking death. ive only seen posts about it over a decade ago and it was never cleared up

i tried to figure it a bit out myself, but did not really get any further on what the causation is. it either seems to be caused by a sim vomiting a lot, or coughing a lot, or both, and possibly while having a low mood, possibly because they complain too much, or standing around too much (not relaxing for too long). i only saw other people mention it can happen during pregnancy, or that maybe their sim was sick when it happened. theres no clear answers

i did a bit of drama stirring by letting the game run by itself, letting sims (not) care for themselves, and with a baby in a house that quickly meant everyone abandoned their needs because of how buggy that is (found some mods fixing it later). that was the first time i encountered this death while playing in my adult years. i have some vague memory of it happening when i played carelessly around with my sim when i was a child

in this recent save where it happened, the mother choked to death once while she was sort of starving but not fully, she was both coughing from having the flu and vomiting from pregnancy for days. her husband saved her from the grim reaper, but she soon got into low mood and kept complaining again, and choked to death again with no one around to safe her. her ghost appeared as green

so like i said, a lot of these decade old posts assume this death is a bug in itself and should not occur because it is so rare. but it happened twice in row for me, and i just ended up assuming that my sim "tried" to cough and vomit at the same time, resulting in them choking in their own vomit, and thats why they got a vomit like green ghost color. it would be cool to know what is actually the causation. i just find it hard to believe that its a bug. like all deaths in sims 2, the game doesnt go out of its way to explain to you what happened other than through visual cues, and it does seem to happen with some consistency, like while you treat your sims poorly, let their house stay roach infested, and/or leave them standing for too long complaining and coughing. in other words, its impossible to replicate if you take care of your sims

The first time I played Pleasantview, way back when I was eleven or so and playing on an absolute brick of a desktop, I deleted Daniel Pleasant from the bin. He still showed up in the family tree and I never noticed any corruption-related errors. Honestly, I'm surprised my game never actually exploded back then, because I did some things that were objectively VBTs in the "total game corruption" sense, like trying to add universal NPCs to households.

Thanks for this video, April! It was informative and did a lot to relieve my anxieties.

I lost a save file when my hard disk ran into issues & wouldn't load up but I managed to recover all the save files. Unfortunately, my state library's worth of cc couldn't be saved, I kept a good record of about 50% of the CC and was able to recover it but unfortunately, there is still missing cc, should I just throw in the towel & deleted my neighbourhood or is if still safe for me to play with?

As an avid sims series player who has grown up to become a software engineer myself, I thought this was a really interesting and well-researched video. A lot of the ominous stuff people said about data "floating around" didn't make sense to me either. It's pretty cool to see how those rumors were related to the soft deletion of Sim data, and how robust the sims 2 really is. I always thought it was the best game in the series. The dev team clearly put a lot of attention to detail and thought into it. Thanks for the interesting watch.

Excellent video, amazing effort to finally explain the myths and near creepypasta legend of the Sims 2 game system.

Moving an entire family out of a lot and moving them to another shouldn't generate stub character files, right?

On a similar note: subhood versions of Belladona Cove always have the families in the Sim Bin because they allegedly "become corrupted, unplayable and go missing" when their subhood is attached to a main hood. Why is that so? And once a player attaches the subhood and moves the families back into their respective apartments, does that create stub character files of Sims that know families from another lot?

Thank you very much for reading and have a nice day/evening :)
