I love seat belts even on an 11+ flight.
yes, sitting for 11 hours is hard but you can also go to the toilet.^^
Is it possible to install seat belts on toilets? I would feel safer.

At flight level 330 , the density is exactly ⅓ of the sealevel density, which means that the true airspeed is 1.732 times the indicated on the instrument.

I’m going to take this opportunity to remind people to always buy a ticket for young children, and to use a car seat on board the aircraft for children under 40 pounds. Your arms will not win against forces like this, crash-tested harnesses and belts will.

Idk—— i took a flight on an L-1011 as a kid. I think those planes felt the same way. I was never so happy to get off a plane. They way that thing shook and rattled on landing was frightening. I was not a fan of any trijet

I don’t understand the speed units. Mach 0.82 should be a little over 1000 kilometers per hour, but 298 knots only gives about 550 kph …

It's not turbulance to be scared of, its those passengers not wearing seatbelts. Same in cars, never sit near someone not using seatbelt, no matter is it public or private transport.

Thanks for this fascinating video. I just wondered how dumping fuel from the horizontal stabilisers (or even using it up during flight) affected handling characteristics of the aircraft, and whether this had any effect on events as they unfolded.

"If he would have (done something)" = agrammatical, conversational mistake, anticipating the following " then (something) would (do)". Careful speakers prefer to say, "I he had (done something), then (something) would" (do). In pedantic terms, in a conditional sentence, the protasis (if clause) employ indicative verbs, whereas the apodosis (then clause) employs subjunctive verbs modified with would or should. Otherwise, your English proves as astonishing as your knowledge of all things avionic.

Great summary of this terrible event. Your videos are incredibly detailed. Since you are such a detail oriented person, I will share with you that the slat lever design in the MD-11 at the time of this event, was a carry over from the DC-10. This is significant because of a few things. The slat lever of the DC-10 (and original design of the MD-11) a small lever to the right of the much larger flap lever. When the MD-11 was designed in the late 1980s, the state of the art of avionics had progressed from the late 1960s when the DC-10 was designed. The MD-11 incorporated computers that the DC-10 did not have. Basically, a keyboard and screen, called a Multifunction Control & Display Unit (MCDU) was needed to provide the crew with an interface, not unlike your home computer needs a screen and keyboard, which you did touch on in the video. Two MCDUs were located on the center pedestal, one on each side and within easy reach of each crew member. After the MD-11 went into service, a number of pitch upsets were occurring. The first officer's MCDU was placed in a location where, when the first officer placed his hand on the keyboard, his wrist would be resting on the small slat lever. If the first officer bumped the lever in a certain way or his long sleeved shirt cuff caught on the lever, it would dislodge the lever from it's detent and move it forward.

Interesting that China doesn't even come into the top ten of civil AirlIne Crashes or fatalities. That accolade goes to other than America. Since 1945, 10,505 people have lost their lives due to airplane accidents in the US. It comes in at number one.

Sounds like, worry not about turbulence, but about any aircraft designed by McDonnell-Douglass or companies merged into, and therefore influenced by, them.

Wasn't the redesign of the slat system on the MD-11 a direct result of the DC-10 disaster where the broken engine mount and subsequent loss of hydraulic pressure caused a slat to RETRACT rather than remain extended?

Many decades in Aircraft Industry..
The MD 10 & MD11 were total Dogs of an Aircraft, rushed thru development & should have been pulled from pax Service in the mid 70s, or just to haul freight.
In early 90s My Dear old Mum was booked on a flight to Ausi, when I found out it was an MD, I pulled her off the flight, causing havoc, I told the ground staff why, and amazingly none of them knew what I was talking about.
Much like people now who fly on B737-8 (Max) having no idea of its fatality record.
But the tickets are cheap

Pilot over corrections. Is like a white knuckled driver. As a passenger, your head is constantly getting jerked around. Feels like you're a bobble head doll. Let go of the death grip on the wheel and make smooth steering wheel corrections to minimize over corrections. Be a courteous smooth driver and keep your focus further down the road so you don't need to avoid things so last second. Your passengers and vehicle will thank you.

Poor design and poor training caused a lot more problems that not wearing your seatbelt. Stop selling your therapy crap. No therapy will ever help someone who is afraid to fly. Your best bet is to sit somewhere else so you're not caught up in it.

I have not, ever, and will not ever fly in a McDonnel Douglas airplane in my life. They seem to crash more often than others. This is a strict rule for me and my family. I will change flights accordingly. Now that their culture has invaded Boeing as well, with the "take-over", Boeing are suffering the same failures and management defects. Boeing can't even get into orbit now... And. don't mention the 737 Max and others that killed lots of people ...
