So far, if you sum it all up, everything about the R5-II is rumor. Speculation. Wish-lists. Well thought-out specifications coming from knowledgeable camera buffs is fun to hear, but at the end of it all there's no tangible information. I'm glad to hear Canon has plans to make more lenses, but with so many in the $2000 range, I'm still waiting to see if they address the average consumer issue of NOT having much in that sweet-spot of $400 to $1500. Thanks, Simon!

I wonder if, with declining adoption of DSLR's with the increase in Camera phones, then to continue to make profit, Canon will have to maintain high prices for it's bodies and lenses. However, if Sony, Nikon etc... continue to innovate, produce lenses and allow third party lenses, then they may overtake Canon in the next few years. This must be their marketing strategy. Canon Imaging may eventually sell off it's mirrorless DSLR's and RF mount to a third party when it no longer is profitable for them. I am inspired by DJI/Hasselblad developments in imaging and drones. Imagine a DSLR with RF mount with the quality and capabilities of the Hasselblad and the remote control and transmission distance of the DJI drones, integrated gimbal support, motorised zooms, and DJI mic. I'd buy one.

If the patented RF-S 15-60mm F2.8 IS USM Z is one of those 12 lenses, that'd be a very meaty bone to placate us APS-C shooters. They still need to open up for an updated Sigma 18-35 f1.8 though.

That change from 16.3 to 17% profit may reflect their expectation to sell slightly fewer of their own RF lenses but still increase profits through royalties. Judging from their own lens releases they have tended toward higher margin expensive side of the market but probably are not hitting targets in units sold. Which is why they have had to adjust their “strategy” and pivot to negotiating deals with third party makers. I also suspect they are trying to require them to only focus on the lower budget end of the market where margins are slimmer. Maybe only RF-S lenses. Sigma won’t like that much.

I cannot help but wonder if the people who are most vocal and anxious for Canon to open up the RF mount to third party lenses are aware of how long it took Sony to open their E mount.

When Sony began selling E mount camera bodies, they were not making or selling lenses.

Sony outsourced their own brand of lenses to Leica. Leica manufactured Sony branded lenses.

It was a couple of years or so before Leica also began selling Leica branded lenses for the E mount.

It was more than 10 years after the release of the E mount that we began to see the first third party lenses from Sigma other companies. Just like Leica previously had done, Sigma and Tamron only offered two or three wide angle primes.

Another two years passed before Sigma and Tamron really began to fill out their E mount lineup with zoom lenses and a few more primes.

In other words, Canon is progressing towards opening up their new mirrorless to third parties a pace that is similar to what Sony had done, if not slightly faster.

The most important camera news is actually coming out of their semiconductor fabrication division. Canon has introduced new state of the art photo lithography equipment which will power their next generation cameras starting with the R1.

But they have already made the 200-800, and I can't really think of a lens that would help me more than that ? What would help, would be a greatly improved R7 Mk II. Maybe they should put a little more focus on "actually producing enough of these lenses, to supply the market, without ridiculous wait times".

hi Simon

What I hope is that Canon will focus on lightweight and high-quality zoom lenses at an affordable price, say around 7,500 dollars, and then take a stand against their competitors. Now Canon lenses are heavy and expensive, and if they are cheap, then they are heavy and not light strong.

I think that what you are saying is that over time we can expect Canon to fill in its RF Mount line of lenses in the same way it filled out its EF Mount lenses. Moreover, I suspect that we will see third party RF Mount lenses after the RF Mount lens collection approaches the number of lenses available in the older EF Mount. I think that Canon is pretty much repeating itself and is simply recovering its R&D investment in the RF Mount and the redesign of RF Mount lenses. I expect that Canon is going to continue to reap the benefits of the new RF Mount while it takes advantage of the new lens designs that have been made possible by the new Mount. Faster zooms with wider range and less chromatic aberration. Faster primes with similar optical improvements and probably more lighter weight lenses that will now be considered mid range lenses.
Switching to the RF Mount adds significantly to Canon’s ability to maximize the improved performance of its mirrorless products across the board.

Canon produces a good product but will continue to loose market share as long as they keep to this model; they’ve lost my business because of it. I started with Canon but walked away from Canon for how they have rolled out their mirrorless system. Canon is a disappointment to me with how they have entered the mirrorless segment.

Hi Simon, nice catch to predict amount of upcoming RF glass .. but I would assume these Canon bars do not include any potential extra third party RF lenses.
The stats about mirrorless share from exchangeable lens camera's is interesting .. but those blue bars and percentages are relative to the global market .. I'd be interested to see also the Canon share in the mirrorless segment !

New technology development=improved sales and profit margins=new technology development. That's how business works and Canon, Sony, and Nikon follow that principle. If Canon's position on protecting their IP and technology results in them producing better and more sophisticated products (R1,R5 mk2, etc.), you cannot fault them for that. If you don't like what they produce or what they're doing, buy something else.

Do you have any numbers to what Canon invest in R&D for the "lens division? I fully agree with the estimation for the numbers of lenses on a yearly basis. Canon probably invest a lot into R&D and want to have a high ROI over the coming years which may explain the number of lenses / year. As they build up their range of RF lenses the end will come. Excellent video 👍

I honestly don't mind adapting older EF, especially L lenses, onto my R7. But my main beef is not getting anything new and uptodate. Sigma isn't making any of their new lenses in EF flavor, holding out for when they can start pushing RF I'm guessing. Their new 24-70 f2.8 is really nice, but only for E and L mounts. And I can't find Sigma's older version, which came in EF, and i hear its just as nice as Canons 24-70 f2.8L versionII at $400 less. This is my main frustrstion. Adapting isn't an issue, getting new is. And new RF from Canon doesn't fit into my budget.

Now on the note on my dead R7. I seem tonuave revived it, though i haven't tried shooting it yet. But yesterdays news still leaves that lingering bad taste of being lead on false hope.

People still waiting for their 200-800. People still waiting for 24 and 35mm f1.2…Still waiting for mid-range RF L glass…

The lenses we have gotten are monster f2.8 constant zooms with $3000 price tags. They still can’t match the internal zooming Sony 200-600.

The lack of 3rd party lenses is short-sighted. Not only are people choosing Sony when entering photography, but decades-long Canon users also advise prospective users to avoid Canon and if they thremselves were to start over today, they would go Sony. But Canon has given us much to believe that they are abandoning the enthusiast market to focus on professionals.

Auto focus while shooting video and not just still photos has drawn a lot of people to mirrorless cameras. Combine it with the prevalence of social media, and people are getting a lot of thrills showcase images and video without having to worry about the skill that used to be needed to achieve the same results.
