I find these two guys very superficial especially towards religion, sure religion has its negative sides and its positive sides.
If it weren't for the Church fathers, notably the Catholic, of the Middle ages, Europe would still be illiterate. Back in the Middle ages most people were illiterate, only Church fathers and Monks had books especially their religious ones not to mention their bibles.
The Church fathers brought literacy and science to Europe and the westernworld. They started the first schools and universities in Europe which brought about the early Christian scientists who created the scientific method.
I get sick of listening to atheists mouthing off as if they brought literacy and science to the western world, its really sickening and superficial 😡 They're just enjoying the fruits of what the Church fathers have brought about, talk about ungrateful ✝️

I had to stop the video discussion at the point about genial mutilation because the decision to be mutilated in that fashion is not the decision of the one being mutilated. The principles of thermodynamics imply that a crystal that is heated will have a certain density of defects -- vacancies, dislocations, etc., and that if you cool the crystal the density of defects will decrease, but there will be some defects in thermodynamic equilibrium. I wonder if there is a quasi-thermodynamic notion of stupidities and superstitions that exists in some sort of equilibrium in society. I was a hospice nurse, so I've been around a lot of deaths and thus have thought much about what happens after. I was raised Catholic in western Canada, but never really believed in god. A good god would not have allowed my family to suffer like we did. I have been a staunch atheist since around age 12. The way I have come to understand the extinguishing of our lives is that there is nothing to fear on the other side, as our consciousness simply ceases to exist. Did you have any conscious awareness before you were born? I think not. So why would we have any awareness after death? I find the idea of soft, warm, dark, nothingness to be quite comforting. If we are lucky enough to get old and feeble, our body's journey towards the end is in many ways like returning to infancy. The only thing I really believe in is balance in the universe, and circles. Like the circle of life, and yin yang.

Mr. Dawkins, if you happen to read my comment, I want you to know you have been a huge inspiration to me and your work has helped me overcome many of the struggles I have experienced in an indirect way by showing me the wonder of our vast & complex world. You help me be strong in what I know is real and true. Thank you for telling people they're wrong when they are. We need more of that in this world. I hope to come see you live in Vancouver 😊.

I really don't see that they are speaking from different points of view. Shermer strikes me as a very dry critical of religion and church, with no sympathy or even less allegiance. Of course, I didn't expect such attitude on Dawkins, but it sounded me more as a chat between fellows of the same straw.

I'm a great admirer of RD but was a bit disappointed at his dismissal of Graham Hancock. I've watched Ancient Apocalypse and was impressed by the skill and thoroughness it exhibits. He doesn't claim to be an archaeologist - only an investigative journalist looking for answers. In fact, in response to being branded a 'pseudoarchaeologist' he said this was like calling a dolphin a 'pseudofish'.
I have a friend who knows him personally and says he's a very clued-up and basically down-to-earth guy who would be the first to admit that his ideas are speculative.

Religion was the first form of politics -- the concocted 'carrot and stick' variety -- and grew from tribe to region to empire in size.
Since the ancient times of the hunter-gatherers, religion co-evolved with war. This is true of the great Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Catholicism, Islam, Mormonism) as each was born of blood and violence.
And war is politics by other means.
Religion + war = politics
Religion became weaponized and still is today, literally and/or figuratively.
Today, sadly, there remain many faiths where religion and politics are a unity.
And in certain advanced cultures, religion struggles to reunite with politics.
Now, secular wars predominate but each soldier is individually inspired by religion.
