Technically, it was a Soviet submarine, not Russian. The Soviets were never fooled but there was nothing they could do about the situation without looking inept and ineffectual.

Read 'Red Star Rogue' by Kenneth Sewell. Soviet captain was going to nuke Pearl Harbor and blame it on the Chinese to start WW3. Submarine sank from an explosion in the missile from a fail-safe self-destruct code imbedded in the launch code to prevent unauthorized deployment.

I have seen so many different variations of what happened I was in the Navy from 67 to 73 in the intelligence community when I was about to get out in 73 I think they tried to recruit me but I was so disillusioned I said screw you
