I bought a bike in January with really good spec for relatively cheap but the more I rode it the more problems showed up and I lost hope, I put it up for sale or swap listing all the problems and a buyer wanted to swap an even higher spec commencal meta for my mondraker dune al I was chuffed and still have the commencal today!

Good, and slanted more towards buyer who is more in tune with what they want. While my son has purchased Trek, Santa Cruz, and Yeti's - I'm still on two 20 + year old Trek's, and the technology and geometry has changed so much I am almost like a first time buyer who has just happened to do lots of climbing and trail rides. I went to a few bike shops in metro Phoenix area recently, and all but one were rather useless - meaning - they didn't seem to know the specs of the bikes they were selling, and they certainly were not trained sales people as they were unable to transfer features into usable benefits for me the rider. So, I have money to spend, motivated to ride something new, and no one to sell it to me.

About a year ago I bought a €200 giant xtc napa. I didn't wanna spend a fortune as I just got into the sport, but man I was impressed on the amount of value you can get for €200 (full-suspension, 3x9 gearing, disc brakes). It was pretty old, about 20 years or so. But still in very nice condition, only needed new tyres and has a bit of difficulty shifting into 3rd gear at the pedals (probably the chain only needs a bit of realignment, haven't fixed it yet because when driving on trails i dont really need any more than 2x9, do wanna fix it eventually tho). For what it is, it drives brilliant - used it multiple times on rough forest trails, and through wet mud, had the whole derailleur covered in goo absolutely abused it😂, and I'm curious to how long it's gonna keep up. In the end its a €200 bike that i already got a year of great fun out of and I couldn't care more if it collapsed tomorrow, but it isn't showing any sign it will and it drives still very nicely

An interesting story I have is that I bought an Ibis Ripley off of Craigslist. The seller was asking a very affordable price for an XT groupset and Carbon wheels. At the time, I thought it was too good to be true. So I asked a few key questions, like why are you selling it so cheap, etc..

It turned out that he actually raced for Ibis and had a stable of bikes. Of course, I was very happy to buy it and get a great deal on a solid bike. I rode that thing for about 5 years before selling it and now ride a Ripmo.

So i‘ve seen a ghost riot 10 uc on a used bike site, and i dont know if i should buy it tbh.. its a 6‘300$ bike, but it only costs 2‘200$ now, which is a litte suspicious ig you ask me… altough, on the photos, the bike looks brand new and the owner put some big upgrades on it, such as a new saddle post, new rotors, new brake pads and a whole new cassette. I will have to go there and ride it to see if it fits, but i don’t know what i should check before buying it. Such as loose parts etc.

I have the choice to buy a bike that’s several years old but it’s never been used but a few times just rode down the road not even 5 miles I’m buying it from a family member it’s a specialized branded bike it retails for 600 and I can get it for 400 it looks brand new but I don’t like the frame art but it doesn’t matter is it better to buy a bike kept in a building for years or get a new Marin bolinas ridge for 450?

There are very very few good deals to be had on used bikes right now it seems. Everyone thinks their 5-6 year old bike is made of gold and have them at very inflated prices. It has become a bit ridiculous.

We have the largest used bicycle store in the world in our town so I usually go there. The bikes have a warranty and everything and they will put used parts on it if the bike doesn't quite fit. This is where I sell my used bikes at.

Got an old norco dh bike drfo had some issues and one hidden issue that would have defo been a red flag lol but I rode it properly like 2 times and then started to notice a clicking sound coming from the bb and then once I had made sure it was the bb I took it put to find stripped and cross threaded threads which had crossthreaded the frame.... took about 7 hours with a meed nose file to get a new bb in 😭😂 but luckily it worked and now the bb can be taken in and out with no issues but I do have anxiety doing so

bought my 2018 remedy 7 off Facebook. it had a couple broken spokes and a bent brake lever but I thought it would be all good so I bought it. fast forward a week and I take it to the shop to get the spokes and lever fixed and get the rest of the bike check out... I almost cried when I realised that the total price to get it up to date was a solid $600 rather than the $150 I was expecting.

So I have had some experience buying used bikes, so fat I have bought three. One I bought for a really good deal and it was not stolen, one bike I bought was confiscated after I bought it and I never got my money back, then the last bike was a decent deal that I just got yesterday. Watch out for "to good of a deal" bikes so like a 2018 trek fuel e 7 for $500. This is a big no no they forgot to include. Hope this helped you, cheers

Two first points are the same for a new bike. To me, you skipped the most interesting part for used bikes: the flags.

I was lucky enough to get a 3 year old nukeproof mega with pretty top spec (for a 3 year old bike) for an unreal price. I’ve got to get the rear shock serviced but other than that, the bike is pretty sound. Not easy to tell if a shock needs a service on viewing either.
