Hey iain, I live in San Diego, and since you’ve been to the west coast, if I wanted to bottom run the different west coast waves, what would I do differently compared to another wave in another area?

nice. i found the best way for me to learn bottom turning was pairing it together with a big spray or fast cutback. this can help give a sense of scale as to how much speed you were able to generate and is especially an important strategy if you're solo and dont have video or advanced feedback available

Hi Iain and greetings from France,

I have been practising some 2-3 Meter barrels in Hossegor South France recently. Had some Problems therefore I have some questions:
1. What do you recommrnd would be the perfect timing to paddle for a big barrel wave. Should it have the form as a more decent "Mountain" or almost a more steep wall? When i Start paddling the steep wall it seems almost to late as it picks me up und pulls me up to the top of the wave to Slam me down steep with the lip.
Maybe you can explain some points about the perfect timing to paddle on a wave.
I prefere paddling a wave as soon as possible because those steep walls rising make me feel that it's going to end up Bad for me, especially the big waves.
Smaller waves are no Problem for me.

2. When you Start paddling for a wave, Do you only use youre feet? As I Was into Surfing, I like using my Arms to paddle for the wave, also I have the impression that I am faster with feet and Arms together. But the Problem it brings with it is, that when the wave gets me startet I have to reposition my Arms correctly on the Board as you once explainend (left turn=left arm 90degree Holding the left upper nose part etc.....)
When I watch your takeoffs you only seem to use your feet to catch the wave and have already positioned your Arms correctly......
The earlyer I want to catch a wave the more speed I need, therefore I also need my Arms to support my feet. Maybe I am too early with my takeoffs or my leg Power is too weak.

2. How do you get out a barrel when it's a closeout wave aspecially often at shorebreaks without injuring yourself? I can not get out those barrels without getting smashed because neither there is a escape possibility on the left nor on the right side........ So it means to me getting in the barrel and then shortly after beeing in the pipe getting slamed.

3.
I am often afraid to get the top of a massive barrel on my back when I get pushed out of it. What can I do to avoid this? Especially at closeout with no escape option.
(technique for beginner)

4. What about typical unjuries in bodyboarding? What is there to Look after or watch out? especially back and neck?

Best regards from France

Yo Ian sick video. Hey I got this problem when I start the bottom turn. I hit my shoulder into the wave and spray goes everywhere. You loose speed and is Super annoying. How can I fix this?

Iain perdona pero si entendi bien haces la bajada antes de entrar en el tubo lenta con el cuerpo para atras y cuando ya haces el botton turn te tiras para adelante para dar velocidad ?

So for the wedge style waves it's much more digging in rails and body weight rather than legs? I think that's the takeaway for those waves right?

Thanks for the great insights and breakdown. Appreciate how you include good examples with the verbal cures. One big question I have is about when to transition my hips forward from the kicking position (catching the wave) to projecting forward to gain more speed for a powerful bottom turn. Do you move forward as you begin the drop, during the drop down the face or as you start the turn? I'd love to see a video on this when you get the chance.

Will try to put my inside leg down more and see if that helps I was worried that would slow me down too much

You should come ride at Hermanus .
Its got a really shallow bank with nice heavy barrels
For the next 3 days in the early morning or late evening the waves are really big .
8-10 ft faces

Whats a good, helpful way to practice these techniques, when i try to bottom turn, I either don't get enough speed to get out of the barrel, or I just get completely pitted. Also I sometimes feel that when I try to take off a really steep and heavy barrel, I end up completely getting launched off the lip of the wave if that kind of makes sense. If you could give me some advice on these I would really appreciate it, thanks. I'm only starting to ride some of my local reef breaks after building some confidence haha.

Hey Ian,

Is their anyway that you can create a video explaining how to learn tricks on the opposite side ?

By this I mean that Im used to surf to my left side and most tricks like backflip and ARS are easier to practice on that side. But for some reason to my right side Im able to do tricks I cant regularly do to the left. Like the invert or forward spin. But yeah mate a vid of this would help a lot. 🏄🏾‍♂️🍺

Thanks for the tip! Sometimes in bigger waves I end up sliding a little bit through the wave, although I can recover from that, it just doesn’t feel right and I end up losing a lot of speed, now I understand how I need to aproach to a certain type of wave! Gonna put that to practice!
