If you look back at what he did like taking an Swedish team to win the UEFA cup and what he did through his career you can’t criticise him. In my opinion no one could have won anything with that golden generation. It was a squad of individuals which was coming into a new dawn of type of football. And yes it was our golden generation but there was key positions in which we massively lacked like goalkeeper, CDM, and a consistent FIT out and out group of goal scorers which England didn’t have under Sven. He won trophy’s so I don’t get how he gets thrashed it’s like capello. Brilliant manager who won everything but gets shot for his time at England.

Not enough people realise that Gullit is the best player on this team. Baggio a close second as he unfortunately had too many injuries. Like Gascoigne, he did not fulfil his true potential. Nesta is in the same category, but difficult to compare a defender with an attacking player.

I listened to sven goram Ericsson on "you're getting sack in the morning" podcast and it was fascinating hearing about his time as england manager and the expectations of the media/England board too. I got a new respect for him

You can see Sven's philosophy of playing his best players in the field in full swing here. He played Scholes as a LM for the same reason he selected Nedved as a LB in this XI, he was too good to be left out. Despite getting so much stick from the English fans & media, he was pretty good for England. Lost only 3 competitive matches inside 90 minutes during his lengthy tenure. Absolute top, top manager. Winning 3 trophies with Lazio in a single season during the best era of Serie A was probably his greatest achievement. One of the greatest managers in football history in my book.

I’m not Sven’s biggest fan for England..but he was solid coming into that role going back to the 80s with Benfica, and then bringing Lazio’s last title in 2000. Hardly a manger who “winged” a career. In order to play anything other than 4-4-2 he would of needed a solid holding player. Who was there to do that role? After Ince retired from England in late 90s, who else was there? Batty? Hargreaves was always booed by fans and questioned by Pundits alike until the the QF loss in 06. Carrick was still young and not as good defensively.

I suspect Sven used to wake up every morning as England boss and think, "I wonder when they're going to realise I'm totally out of my depth". Terribly uninspiring, and walked away with millions and millions from an even more incompetent FA. Like all England managers have done for years – extremely well rewarded for failing.
