How does the suppler know or detect that a building has a poor power factor so that they can apply a surcharge?

Does the last example have a real world possibility? Is it practical to put that large of a capacitor on a building with that large of a power draw?

Although I get it…I never liked the ‘beer analogy’.
A better analogy (for me anyway) is guy pulling a train car with a rope at an angle.
The closer to pf = unity, the closer the guy gets to pulling the train car straight on.
But, that’s just me.
Otherwise, excellent video.

Power factor penalty works also the other way ie overcompensated network, which the power companie can tolerate to a certain degree. They in turn will have to use compensation ie inductive loads. This has alot to do with underground cables which is inherently capacitive loads not regarding the load connected.

A kVAr-capacitor? I'm into electronics and in our world, we measure capacitance by the Farad or fractions of Farads. What's the conversion factor?

I don't get, (in the beer analogy) if the apparent power is the combination of the foam and the beer, how come the apparent power increases when there's more foam? it will always be 1 glass of beer right so the apparent power is the same? please anyone correct me if i'm wrong

You did not explain “what is power factor?” You explained it’s Martha and graphs etc. Actually what is it? Who is it generated in electrical power generation?

Question from a dummy (me): could the power factor be called "electrical efficiency" or just "efficiency"? As in like a 100w light buld, could be 90% efficient giving off 90% light and 10% heat...... would that be a power factor of 0.9?

In the example of the induction motor comparison, could you power those motors with a 10KVA solar panel and a converter that outputs the amount of apparent power needed for the motor?

I believe you skipped a step. Capacitors are not rated in kVAr, but in Farad. I know there's a forrmula for calculating it, but it escapes me at the moment. Anyways, quite a decent topping-up of one's electro-physics :)

A prof of mine used to remark about the beer analogy that it's actually wrong. He had an edited version of the correct represenation then on the beamer to our amusement, which was based on stretching the image of the beer into the shape of a triangle (sans the hypotenuse), because apparent power is the sum of the sqares of true and reactive power. Gotta admit that image has stuck with me and is my frist thought whenever seeing it done wrong. ;)

Hello Paul,
I spent 8 hours today trying to learn Power Factor from my course notes and text book. Became really highly frustrated because nothing made any sense.
Then I watched and studied your videos. I first went through Resistance, Capacitors, Inductors and Induction Motors and then I did your entire Power Factor Video including all calcs.
I starting with your videos at 22.00 on Monday night. Its now 03.34 on Tuesday morning and I can now say that I have mastered Power Factor.

WITH ALL MY HEART, THANK YOU PAUL. YOU ARE MY SUPER-HERO.

Your Videos are super fantastic. Please keep up the Excellent work!

Regards,
Rajan.

So why do industries have lower power factors.?
Is it because they have a high number of inductive loads.?
