Now take HEMA right and apply the concept to all historical weapon martial arts from all countries with living martial systems and make this an Olympic sport. The "points" system HEMA currently uses is already good for larger use. Also even if culturally the country didnt use swords much most countries with a living or historically recorded martial system had spear techniques. And spears were everywhere. Could do divisions based on weapon.

For the point system, they should also consider the impact force rather than just contact. You won't cut through full plate armour just by tapping it with a sword.

How much of the longsword fencing techniques are actually historically correct? What I mean by that is, how much of it is made up from reading older longsword manuals, and how much of it is actually historically correct...? I guess I could simplify the question...is this actually how people fought back in the 13th-14th century when longswords were popular?

So in my local area they have SCA and I’m noticing that in my observation is that the SCA seems to approach things more in a hobbyist sense, whereas HEMA is more like what I am personally used to and much more like training in hand to hand martial arts in comparison where it seems…. More serious and less fan boy. I think I may start driving the hour and start going to some HEMA classes, especially since they teach small sword which is one of my all time favorites

I have to disagree that the long sword fighting and katana fighting are similar. Long sword fighting is based more on continuous strikes, thrusts, jabs and parries. A more aggressive fighting style. While Japanese sword fighting is based more on blocking and defensive strategy. Such as evasion and blocking and redirection. It's a more defensive style. That uses it's opponents strength against them.
