Probably Carpenter's most comedic film. He was playing around with a lot of classic genres in movies with this one. Kurt Russell also played the part of "Captain Jack" in the movie "overboard" and this is a similar over-the-top bravado character. James Hong as Lo Pan. Notice that the movie never quite makes it to overly silly and never quite makes it to overly scary, riding a good balance.

Jack Burton thinks he's the hero of this story, but he's really just the sidekick.

What I loved about this movie was the end. He LEAVES the girl Doesn't kiss her doesn't fall for her and they drive off into the sunset. He just LEAVES. It is insane and totally breaks the norm.

I was 11 when this came out. Really loved it. It became an instant family classic in my house. I got a bunch of other kids to have their parents rent it and everyone i knew loved it. The one liners and their delivery is the standard. SO MANY GOOD ONES !!! May the Wings of Liberty, Never Lose a Feather !!!

TBR- "is that a penis?" lol
I love how Jack isn't a unstoppable badass action hero but instead is more like John McClane...still a badass but more of the every day man, does get hurt while still overcoming the odds!

One of the two heroes in movies that are pretty much clueless.
The other would be Ash Williams of "Evil Dead" fame.

There is a reason John Carpenter is my favorite director/film-maker of all time with a close second Ridley Scott.
His movies are so much fun and never boring. From start to finish a fun ride.
Great reaction guys. This is like the 4th time I watch it, but whatever lol.

Jack is the comic relief but many audiences at the time would have seen the white dude as the hero. Jack messes up almost everything unless it involves his single skill, his lightning-fast reflexes. This is, IMO, one of the best subversions of the white savior trope because Jack is just winging things. Wang Chi and Egg Shen do all the heavy lifting and Jack's reflexes are what let him kill the big bad and make out like the hero when he never really was.

Check out Kurt Russell as ELVIS. It was a ABC TV movie in 1979. Directed by John HALLOWEEN/ The FOG Carpenter. I'm not a huge Elvis fan. Loved his big hits, but was never a FANatic of anything. But I think this was the best respectful bio movieever done on him. Russell was a excellent Elvis. He even met Elvis in the mid 1960's. He had a early cameo role as a smart ass kid with Elvis in one of his goofy movies. Check out John Carpenter's Stephen King's Christine (1983) also directed by John Carpenter too. And King's to part tv mini-series Salem's Lot CBS TV Nov 1979.

When Carpenter was Writing Big Trouble in Little China he planned to have the setting as a western but realised it would more relatable as a modern setting. That's why a lot feels like a western.

This reminds me of "The Matrix" in that there's not much accomplished after they escape from the bad guys, except going back where they escaped from to rescue the one person left behind. If you want a truly insane movie, try the Hong Kong classic "Swordsman II" or "A Chinese Ghost Story."

Just to let you know this is the reason why the game mortal kombat was ever created because of Lightning (Raiden). And if you notice the like the outfit he's wearing and stuff like that how hIs outfit kind of mimics that so, but, you can look it up and they are the reason why well this movie is the reason why the game was ever created because it was the inspiration for that
