📖So many books that contain lists of noteworthy books. You could make a list of such books. Or two lists – a list of those books that include themselves in their list and a list of those that do not. Though Bertrand Russell would caution you against such an endeavor. 😄
📖The Anne Fadiman and Clifton Fadiman books look quite interesting. I shall have to check them out.
📖I also find making lists quite comforting. I maintain a list of my books in a Word document, in a table that is sortable and searchable. My book categories are 44 in number, and include such narrow categories as “Mystery – Hard Case Crime” (separate from Mystery) and “Fiction Series” (for books based on pop culture characters such as The Shadow or John Drake, Secret Agent).
📖Naturally, one of my favorite songs by The Go-Go’s is “Girl of 100 Lists”.
Solid pull with the James Joyce lists - and another fine video as usual. I too am a sucker for lists, I wonder if that’s a concomitant symptom of bibliomania 🤔
ОтветитьWhen you mentioned lists-people who make lists-what came to my mind immediately was Susan Sontag-in her Journals & Notebooks she has lists written down.
''Reborn: Journals & Notebooks 1947-1963' Susan Sontag
'As Consciousness is Harnessed to Flesh: Journals & Notebooks 1964-1980' Susan Sontag
Addicted to lists? Not me! (stuffs all my journals, pads of papers, post-it notes under the table...) I've been a list-maker all my life. As a child I would make lists of all my trolls, Breyer horses and their "bloodlines", rocks I collected, books I read. Still making those book lists, of course! And movies I watch, birds I have identified in our yard, lists of projects and things to build in Creative Mode of Minecraft (unexpectedly got into that during quarantine at my ripe age!) and so much more! I have always loved lists in journals/diaries of anything from things being studied (Anne Frank) to birthday gifts (Queen Victoria) and everything in between! I also love reading any interesting online English Lit syllabus I can find or summer reading lists, and make lists of what my favourite famous authors read! Because I apparently still don't have enough to read already!!?? Fabulous video on a wonderful subject!!
ОтветитьLove the Mustich!
ОтветитьOoh, an Umberto Eco which I don't have! Great video, Felicity, you were missed. As an accountancy retiree, I was interested in the Clifton Fadiman books. I too am a terrible list maker. My books to buy notebook even as a couple of pages dedicated to your suggestions which haven't read, yet.
ОтветитьTime for a reread of Ex Libris. And adding that Eco to my wishlist!
ОтветитьThis speaks to my soul!
