Great tips, I’m from the UK and we are lucky that we have standardised on the CCS connection. One question what make/model is your mobile phone holder?

The issue I just ran into on my trip was insects smashing into the vehicle and disrupting the autopilot cameras. My front end was getting really dirty with bug guts, and I had a few instances where the autopilot slammed on my brakes on the highway, thinking there was something in front of me, nearly causing me to wreck. Once I cleaned off the front end, the issue stopped. I know others have had a similar issue that did not involve insects, but for me, the issue stopped when I cleaned it off, so I am attributing the issue to that. I will make it a point to always check the front end at every Supercharger stop and clean if needed. Having your brakes get slammed on the highway is not fun; luckily it never happened when I was in a lot of traffic traveling 75 mph. Thanks for the tips. Not turning off unneeded items was a mistake I made while I was staying at a hotel for four days. It ate up a lot of battery in the parking garage. It had me worried for a while.

As the new owner of TESLA X, we are SO MAD from our last Road Trip (5K miles), as we SPENT HOURS MORE just to stop EVERY 150 -200 MILES, unlike our 2023 TOYOTA SIENNA PLATINUM HYBRID that can DRIVE for 500 MILES even you're driving 90-100Mph with FULL LOAD of stuff, wirh captain chairs, huge monitor in the back, more leg & head room, etc...............

For a LONG ROAD TRIP, do NOT fuckin bring a TESLA, just bring or rent the LATEST MINIVAN in the market, period.

Last week, I traveled 3300 miles (OKC to the Montana/Canadian border and back) in my Model Y. Several suggestions that you indirectly spoke about that are worth mentioning again: (1) Tesla tends to direct you to 150kw Superchargers, when 250kw Superchargers might be nearby as well; (2) Not all Supercharger sites are all alike, especially at night. During my trip, I needed to charge at a Supercharger site in a real industrial area after midnight, and it was somewhat stressful entering the area and waiting to complete the charge; (3) Tesla will show when your vehicle is charged enough to proceed to the next charging site. However, one should consider factors which might impact that charging level, and plan accordingly. While Tesla might suggest that 8 to 15 percent charge is sufficient, I tried to charge up to 19 to 23 percent to take into consideration slow traffic issues in big cities, weather conditions, etc.; and finally (4) Be cognisant that Tesla roadside assistance is not unlimited; thus, before you travel know what they will or won't provide should you have vehicle trouble.

#1 Mistake. Taking you car which was not designed for long distance traveling on a long trip. And if I see you driving at way below 75mph on highway because of your stupidity trying to save on your range I or someone else will run you off the road.
#2 Try to plan to go to the National park like Yellowstone in Winter. See what happens. Yeah, plan all you want.
Just get a good Hybrid and you can travel all you want without making these stupid videos.

Great video. Thanks for the tips. However, I would forget the expensive CCS sdapter. With major car manufacturers announced that they will use Tesla NACS, the CCS supercharger will be relegated to a minor role, definitely not worth considering. The RV adapter maybe much more worthwhile to have.

If your going uphill(which we have a lot of in CO) range loss is about 20-40% depending on slope. Turning off the AC adds a little back. There are usually alternative routes that can be traveled safely, without danger of not being able to charge so planning matters. Also you may gain if the downhill is significant as well.

On average for owners with a home power connection Supercharging only represents about 5% of overall charging. A home charger installation is a one-off cost so it's cost can be absorbed over the many years that it is used. Off peak electricity savings will easily justify it's purchase. With tax/registration this is different from country to country but although the amount provided by BEV owners will increase a difference between ICE and BEV road contributions will probably be maintained by governments. Tire wear is a bit more but this is often made worse by the driver using the extra performance. Using PPF film will apply to any car so is not a comparison issue. My insurance was about the same as an equivalent ICE car. Premium connectivity is an optional extra and if not bought doesn't put the owner at a disadvantage compared with an ICE car owner.

On my first ev roadtrip I went into the mountains and night fell. I was 130 km away from the charger and the battery indicated 100 km range left. What was I supposed to do? At first I put the car in neutral on downhills but still didn't get any kms back. Then I put it in drive on downhills and did not accelerate at all. It went 50km/h regenning downhill, almost got rammed by trucks but got to the charger with 15km. So now I'm very friendly with the a better planner and plugshare apps. oh and bought a rwd long range model 3...

With our Model Y, my wife and I drove from LA California to Omaha Nebraska (1600 miles one way), and back without issue. We used the Tesla navigation system, and supercharger network. It worked flawlessly. If you go the speed limit, your good to go. We used autopilot which made the trip a breeze.

Good tips overall…but be careful about charging to 100% the night before. I always leave a little extra, because I live in the mountains outside Denver, and the first 60 miles of my trips are always downhill. If the car is charged to 100%, there is no room for regenerative braking to put power back to the battery, so the system gives an alert that “regen braking is diminished.” This causes me to have to use my brakes going down the mountain.

My second thought is that I am NOT a fan of ABRP (A Better Route Planner). I think the interface is terrible and it overcomplicates route planning. I used it once when I had a lot of cargo in my car, because you can tell it how much extra weight you’re carrying. But part of the beauty of the Tesla system is that you hop in the car, press the voice button, and say “navigate to Austin, Texas.” I have made that trip between Breck and Austin many times, and the onboard planner is great. Come to think of it, I never plan my routes ahead of time…just hop in and go. I might add 5% extra if it’s really cold or really hot, and I use Autopilot and Traffic Aware Cruise Control to even out the acceleration. With those, I hit the estimates almost perfectly.

I love my Tesla, but traveling in it is too stressful. There are too many sacrifices to be made and too much planning to do. If you only have money for one car, buy a gas car. Although EVs are getting way better, they are still not full replacements for gas cars.

Fact:

As an owner of 2020 Tesla S Plaid and 2023 Tesla Y Performance, I can say to y'all that my family hates the TOO MUCH stops in our 5K miles Road Trip from Austin to North Dakota & Minnesota, then back to Texas.

Every year, we do 5K miles Road Trip and always renting Toyota or Chrysler Minivan and we can drive 3-5 hours straight with NO STOPS and everyone's happy.

EV is only good now within the city/state, as IF you will use it for thousands of miles , you must PLAN the trip to where to stop and charge, etc............ UNLIKE the ICE minivan, just keep on driving as long as you can, and have fun wherever you go.

Maybe by 2030 - onwards, it will be better than today, as it has very LESS MILEAGE per CHARGE to compare to a ICE cars, period.

Have a great day to y'all!

Does anyone else have a Tesla that slams on the brakes every 10 minutes while using the cruise? I just took my first road trip in my extended range model Y. In the first 150 miles it slammed the brakes 15 times. I tried disabling AEB with no improvement. Tesla tells me there is nothing wrong and that they are working on a software patch

It's stupid to drive slow on highways. Say if you drive at +5 the speed limit, it would reduce your travel time by 5 minutes for every hour of travel time. Though this would cause an extra 2-3% battery discharge per hour. But on the whole, even if you charge your car every 2 hours, that means a +5 MPH would save you 10 minutes and cause an extra discharge of 5-6%. And it would take an extra 2-3 minutes of charge time to recover this lost 5-6%. So at the end you have saved 6-7 minutes of driving time.

The pull in spots could also be used for people in wheelchairs. I don't have a Tesla yet but am concerned about backing into a charging station. I have to hop like a rabbit, if alone, to the trunk and get my wheelchair out. I then have to sit it down, spread the seat and sit down. Will there be enough room between the back of the Tesla and the curve to do this? I have no idea but the pull in spots would eliminate this concern.

So if I pull in to the last stall available and it's a pull in. I need to sit in my car in case a car with a trailer arrives, so I can pull out and go to the end of the line. Because the car with a trailer is priority over my need to charge??? Come on... that's just ridiculous.

Use your cruise-control to maintain a regular speed - it's easy to get distracted and slow slide pass your target long-range speeds (i.e. 100-105 km/h).
Thanks for the tips, I tend to forget them. Will make a check-list.
