The best episode ever...so this is about the Sega Genesis? I'm joking, I'm joking...clearly it is about the Sega System. ;)

I’m from the UK and we got the SNES in the same design as the Famicom.
It was years before I knew or saw that monstrosity which is the US version. Just why? Even those horrible purple buttons on the controller are just dumb 🤷‍♂️

I can play actraiser 2 with no issues. The 1st one stumped me because I did not get the instructions with my copy and being a 10 year old couldn't figure out how to trigger the holes to open and got stuck halfway though the game.

King of Dragons also has a block button of you use a shield character. I usually map mine to R.

Still my overall favourite console of all time. It's a lot simpler in terms of function and features than many modern consoles, but that's actually just one more of the many reasons why I prefer it to them (no silly avatars, no user accounts, no online setup, no digital games I don't own, no convolute menu interface, no day-one patches, no fear of viruses, no loot crates, no EULAs, and absolutely no "social" media integration at all). It does one thing exceptionally well--I'm not even going to state what that patently obvious thing is--and, when all is said and done, I honestly don't need or usually even want any more from my video game console. What an amazing system, which, interestingly enough, I think still has a whole crap-load of untapped potential just waiting to be discovered--and I actually can't wait to see more from it. All things being relative, this is as good as gaming has ever gotten imo.

Six years on, I think the Switch has moved into the #2 position for all-time great Nintendo consoles. But nothing will unseat the SNES.

I don't know, for me the snes has always been...... very boring and meh. I even watched this entire episode to understand it better. its just something about it that I just can't get used to. I ADORE the Sega genesis and turbografx 16, but the Snes I could gladly do without.

Played so many hours of Street Fighter II Turbo, Starfox and Lufia 2 on this thing.

Was too poor to have any other games at the time lol, so never played Super Mario World or Link to the Past until much later in life.

Still, the SNES was great!

You're not alone Joe, Secret of Mana is incredibly overrated. The game is unfinished and the story is really nonsensical (even for a 16-bit game). The soundtrack is its only redeeming quality.

Wait - did Joe add "ooh" "ow" sound effects when Yoshi is getting punched? It's subtle but I'm convinced that's what I am hearing.

I was born about 8 years after the console released. Dad called me the other day cleaning out his closet and asked me if I wanted his old one. Has the box and everything + a copy of Link to the past. Looks like a pretty cool console, looking forward to it

Got my SNES in May of 1992 (May 18th, 1992... it was my 11th birthday), so I had 2 full years with it before I got my Genesis.
I wish I had gotten the Genesis first... I didn't even know it existed until probably 1990 (I read only Nintendo Power back then, and they sure never mentioned it!), when I saw it set up in my local Sears and got to play Sonic for the first time. It blew me away.
And the library of games was staggeringly large compared to the SNES, with which I rather quickly found myself getting bored.
SNES has better A/V fidelity, for sure.
But the Genesis is a graphical powerhouse when it needs to be... too bad the same can't be said for the audio portion... the SNES handily defeats the Genesis in that comparison.

I probably rewatch this episode every 6 months or so, it's just such a good review of what I still regard as my favorite console of all time. The PC Engine and Mega Drive will always be dear to me, but the breadth and depth of the library especially when all the Super Famicom exclusives are also included means I play my Super Famicom almost every evening of the week still.

To be fair, SNES developers eventually learned how to do the same thing Pilotwings did (variable Mode 7 background resizing) without having to use an enhancement chip.

"Secret of Mana" was kinda meh, but the Japan-Only sequel "Seiken Densetsu 3" improves on it in every way, especially the music, and is my fav. Square title of all time. There's a couple of fan translations. I played through the DeJap version. It's amazing.

Also, there's another Japan-only but translated Square game worth trying. It's called Bahamut Lagoon. You nurture and power up your stable of dragons which fight alongside you in turn based strategy. It's rough, but the quirkiness of it kept me playing for a good while.

I can't tell if I rewatched this too many times or if all you guys do is rehash the same freaking games. Like it feels like 50% of the games were ones you've mentioned. And was multiple parts where you just posted the review you already did like with Donkey Kong and Castlevania.

I use to love SNES but I feel like its charm is fading which never thought would happen. That phase with nes where still love but just don't value the games as much, thats what SNES is starting to feel like. Soon they'll both be like Atari and essentially forgotten.
