I had dinner with someone who collected these early recordings. His weren't as old as these and, if I remember right, were wax on tubes. He kept them in a sewing cabinet so they wouldn't get dusty. Unfortunately, he forgot his windows faced the sunset ... and they all melted.

Edison's descendants SHOULD be ashamed to be associated with this lying, thieving snake. Alas, they are cut from the same cloth and are addicted to the fame and money just like he was.

I would not in the least be surprised if even earlier examples are discovered. We are quite good at forgetting history and losing knowledge, discarding what is thought old fashioned, incorrect or too commonplace to bother preserving. When our civilization falls the digital things will be lost but some physical recordings might survive for some centuries maybe until the descendants of the survivors recover / discover them. When I was little I found a technical school promotional record buried in the soil and leaves in the forest. It was quite playable after simple cleaning with water.

It was far sighted to have a tuning fork pitch as a time reference. Scott was clearly perspicacious. Maybe he knew his work was unplayable at the time. Perhaps his dream was that technology would evolve and he knew that he was part of it. But maybe he also wanted a visual reference on his work as the waveforms were meant to be seen. The study of sound had many aspects then as it does now, but then they were nascent. There were no oscilloscopes as we think of them, and the same passes to whatever applied to the term 'microphone' back then.

Just imagine how many voices of great singers and speeches by outstanding actors and politicians have been lost over centuries simply because the humanity couldn't record sound.

The discovery of recording vibrations was incredible, but just as incredible is being able to create a playback device. Events like this are so much more rarer than winning the biggest lottery ever

It is quite incredible how far technology has come. We can peer back at these fairly recent points in history when it was a totally different world. Things we take for granted today were only just being discovered. Imagine being around when these things were invented, it must have been incredible. And now look at what we have today, it would seem miraculous to people even 50 years ago. I wonder what’s next?
