i would like to press cut whilst playing the video. When I hit K it does a very small double cut at the playhead. This resulting in two cuts that I then have to delete, which is a bit cumbersome. anyone knows how to get around it?

Ctrl+K isn't working for me? Going to Sequence > Add Edit manually after selecting my clip also does nothing so I really don't understand what's wrong..

Edit: Okay, I figured out I need to select the track where the clip is in for it to work (not the actual clip). Unlike in the video where he just clicks on the file he wants to split, my Premiere (probably out of date) requires me to highlight the track that my clip is in by clicking some empty space next to where the track title & controls are - then it works fine.
