Female scarlet badis (Dario dario) are rarely sold in the aquarium hobby primarily due to their less striking appearance and lower demand. Unlike the vividly coloured males, which flaunt bright red and orange patterns with bold stripes, females are smaller, less colourful, and lack the vibrant markings that make the species so desirable. As a result, breeders and suppliers often prioritize raising and selling males to meet the aesthetic preferences of hobbyists. Additionally, females are essential for breeding programs, and their limited numbers in captivity mean they are often retained by breeders rather than sold. This imbalance can make it challenging for hobbyists to source females for reproduction or community tanks, perpetuating the male-dominated availability in the trade.
