How GOOD was Umbreon ACTUALLY? - History of Umbreon in Competitive Pokemon (Gens 2-6)

I feel like you missed a VERY important thing about Umbreon when it came around to gen 5. In gen 5 and onward, it fell in usage not really due to to other passers being more useful, it's because Mean Look + Baton Pass no longer worked! After you pass a mean look (or Spider Web, for that matter) they could switch, which pretty much crippled it's entire nitch and just became a boring old wannabee Blissey/Miltank Fusion that I guess could Foul Play. It's really a shame how much Umbreon was shafted in gen 5, it really did get nothing relative to it's Sunny counterpart.

Umbreon was good but they've trying so dang hard to screw it over l. They literally screwed it over in scarlet and violet. Making it where it can't learn curse or toxic or anything that heals it.. guess to many cry babies can't use their brains and make a team to counter it .

Fun fact: Umbreon is more compatible than Vaporeon

It‘s actually weird to me that Umbreon never got „Pressure“ as an ability. Seems like a fairly obvious fit.

Honestly, I don't really see any other pokemon in gen 4 that could fullfill the role as a tanky cleric and wish pasher as well as Umbreon could since since Blissey is less tanky overall on the physical side and doesn't have the threat of curse and STAB payback that Umbreon has.

Since baton pass is banned in pokemon showdown OU (a least in gen 4), this is how I run it:

EVs: 236 HP / 72 Atk / 56 Def / 144 SpD

Its curious, today 5 years later at gen9, umbreon fell first to RU and then to NU whete currently stays, by something not even mentioned in the video: toxic, losing toxic made umbreon as useless as it was before against poison and steel types, but now against everyone, only capable of hurting via foul play and must be in specific situation since it lacks physical defense to switch in to most attackers that would take high damage, being highly situational and easy to prevent unlike toxic that could kill any mon that wasn't immune neither had status healing moves/abilities, now it can't 1v1 kill even weak psychic or ghost special sweepers (which tend to have fairy moves anyways)

i started competitive play in Gen 4 and Umbreon was one of the first mons i started using in singles. I had Calm nature with Curse, Payback, Confuse Ray, and Moonlight; full investment in Sp.Def and HP. Thing was a monster half of the time. i used it on my OU team as a bulky sweeper and it worked so well, only really being stopped by opposing Cursed t-Tar or other taunt users.

The 130/110/95/65/65/60 BST spread of Eevelutions should be scraped. They limit them hard.

Also give them better movepools.

Umbreon should have poison heal as it's ability. It matches it lore so much.

I wonder why umbreon doesnt have roar ! Or else body slam for paralyse? Curse baton pass bodyslam rest. Something like this. Or else roar toxic protect rest.

Umbreon isn't just a Starter in Colosseum, it is THE Pokémon for your team. I can't count the number of times Umbreon saved my skin in battles. A lot of folks remove Umbreon and stick with Espeon in Colosseum. I can tell you from personal experience, that's a big mistake. Umbreon's bulk and defense make it the defining member of your team nine times out of ten.

Around 15 years ago, I'll always remember when I caught a female Eevee in Black 2 and it evolved into an Umbreon. It was my first Eeveelution and, since I had caught it's pre-evolution just before sleep, it seemed natural it would become an Umbreon !

After Pokémon colosseum when my umbreon held out long enough for me to catch tyranitaur with my whole team dead he earned a Permanent spot on my team

I used to troll my friends using an Umbreon with Toxic, Confuse Ray, Double Team and Moonlight. It was so unbelievably infuriating I never dared use it seriously.

Watching this in 2022, I can confirm confidently say that this is my least favorite eeveelution. You set up with any mon and then umbreon comes in, tanks it, and foul plays you into oblivion. I hate it.

Umbreon might have fallen in the competitive scene, but at least I was never into it. At the very least, I can say that in gen 7, Umbreon fell even as a Baton Pass user due to the existance of Extreme Evoboost, and in gen 8... It's really annoying to breed an Eevee so it gets both Toxic and Wish, and you still get just a cuter and less tanky version of Chansey/Blissey out of it. Inner Focus is... nice to have, I guess, given that Umbreon will always be slower, but it doesn't matter much if it gets deleted. Its job is to be as annoying as possible, but it can attack decently well with Foul Play... if it survives a Swords Dance whatever from the opposing Pokemon.

Also, I'm still weirded out by the fact that it can learn Stored Power, yet Nasty Plot (y'know, the Dark type setup move) is nowhere to be found in its moveset. It barely gets any buffs, it's so strange.

i remember as a kid i tried to beat the battle tower in crystal with rest talk umbreon, i thought it was the best pokemon ever, because you could pull rest with sleep talk, making you basically immortal. i always lost to heracross megahorn tho, i didnt even understand what type megahorn was supposed to be, i assumed it was some sort of one hit kill move, because it always took umbreon out, good old times xD

Meanwhile Umbreon was the reason I was able to beat both Emerald Enhanced AND Renegade Platinum. An absolute unit (no Mean Look, instead I ran Payback)

Is actually op. Doesn't take away the fact that fighting types will usually destroy umbreon but if you can set up 2 curses you'll be able to withstand most of what is thrown at you. The worst enemy of umbreon is breloom.
